Latham, Western Australia
Latham is a small town in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It is named after Latham Rock, a large granite rock close to the townsite. The rock was named for an early pastoralist who established a watering place for stock being droved through the area. When construction of the railway from Wongan Hills to Mullewa was planned in 1913, the Public Works department decided the area would be suitable as a railway station and a townsite. The railway opened for service in 1915 and the townsite was gazetted in 1917. The bulk wheat bin was opened in November 1936. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. Mullewa, Western Australia
Mullewa is a town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, north of Perth and east-northeast of Geraldton. Mullewa is well known for an abundance of wildflowers in spring and it is one of the few places in Western Australia that the wreath flower grows. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. The town is a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling. History European settlers moved to the area in 1869 to take up pastoral leases for farming. In 1894, the government built a narrow gauge railway from Geraldton to Mullewa and the town was gazetted in the same year. George Dinnie
George Dinnie (18 July 1875 – 13 June 1939) was a sportsman, strongman, wrestler and champion dog breeder. For a while, he was part of the travelling show promoted by Henry Jasper Redfern in Sheffield, England, and often billed as the "strongest man on earth". Early life In 1875, Dinnie was born at Ayr, South Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, although this has not been substantiated. While many newspapers reported Dinnie as being the son of world-renown strongman and noted champion of the Highland Games, Donald Dinnie (1837–1916), no specific evidence confirms this familial relation. Cooperative Bulk Handling
The CBH Group (commonly known as CBH, an acronym for Co-operative Bulk Handling), is a grain growers' cooperative that handles, markets and processes grain from the wheatbelt of Western Australia. History CBH was formed on 5 April 1933, at a time when a royal commission on bulk handling of grain was in progress, and after over 20 years of failed proposals for bulk handling of grain in Western Australia. The trustees of the Wheat Board of Western Australia and Wesfarmers registered the company together with capital of £100,000 divided evenly into 100,000 shares. The cooperative was formed under the principle of one person, one vote, regardless of the amount of grain supplied. CBH merged with the Grain Pool of WA in November 2002, after the Parliament of Western Australia passed legislation allowing the merger to go ahead. CBH grain receival points (also known as ''the bins'' or ''wheat bins'' in local popular usage) are grain silos spread around Western Australia, primarily in the wheatbelt region. Historically they have been linked with the wheatbelt railway lines, and the transport of grain to ports for export. Wongan Hills, Western Australia
Wongan Hills is a town in the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu, in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The town is approximately 182 km north of the state capital Perth, at an altitude of 286 metres. The town is named for a nearby range of hills that are found to the north-west of the town, also named Wongan Hills, which was first recorded in 1836 by Surveyor General of Western Australia John Septimus Roe. History The area was settled by the 1900s, and in 1911 the town was gazetted and named after the range. "Wongan" is derived from the Indigenous Australian name "wangan-katta", "wanka" and "woongan". History The Division is named after the pioneering Durack family, upon whom Dame Mary Durack based her popular historical novels. A drover in Australia is a person, typically an experienced stockman, who moves livestock, usually sheep, cattle, and horses "on the hoof" over long distances. Reasons for droving may include: delivering animals to a new owner's property, taking animals to market, or moving animals during a drought in search of better feed and/or water or in search of a yard to work on the livestock.
