Las Illas
Las Illas (in Catalan: ''Les Illes'') is a former commune in Pyrénées-Orientales (France), now part of Maureillas-las-Illas. Geography Las Illas is located south of Maureillas and north of Maçanet de Cabrenys (Catalonia, Spain). History Las Illas became a commune in 1790. Las Illas was only linked to the electricity network on 26 July 1955. The commune had repeatedly asked to have electricity since 1923. Maçanet de Cabrenys is a municipality in the ''comarca'' of Alt Empordà, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. It also belongs to the ''subcomarca'' of Alta Garrotxa. It includes the villages of Arnera, Les Creus, Les Mines, Les Salines, Tapis, Els Vilars, and Oliveda. It is situated at the foot of the Eastern Pyrenees, with the Rivers Arnera and Frausa. Feu Fiscal
The term "feu" (French for "fire" from the Latin ''focus'' meaning ''hearth'') meant, especially in the Middle Ages, the hearth, first in the strict sense (the place where the fire burns) and figuratively: the family home (cf. the expression "without fire or place") or the family itself. Very quickly, it was used as the basic unit for assessment, calculation, and collection of tax and it was called the "feu fiscal" meaning "fire tax". Use of Taxes in the Middle Ages For tax allocation, the principle was to divide the total amount required to be collected by the number of fires, which necessitated a census of fires which was called "réel". The task was relatively simple to perform to the level of an urban district, however it took on a whole different scale in a rural area or across a kingdom.
