Las Casas is one of the forty subbarrios of Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Demographics In 2000, Las Casas had a population of 6,775. In 2010, Las Casas had a population of 6,399 and a population density of 20,641.9 persons per square mile. Features is a community and recreational center located in Las Casas. Camp Las Casas US Army installation The area of "Las Casas" was also where the United States Army established Camp Las Casas, a military installation established in 1904. The camp was the main training base of the "Porto Rico Regiment of Infantry". On January 15, 1899, the military government changed the name of Puerto Rico to Porto Rico. (On May 17, 1932, U.S. Congress changed the name back to "Puerto Rico"). The Porto Rico Regiment of Infantry was a segregated U.S. Army Regiment which was later renamed the "65th Infantry Regiment". Barrio Obrero (Puerto Rico)
Obrero (often called Barrio Obrero) is one of 40 subbarrios of Santurce in the municipality of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Obrero is the most populated subbarrio in Santurce. The Residencial Las Casas public housing is located in the area. Demographics In 2000, Obrero had a population of 11,467. In 2010, Obrero had a population of 10,316 and a population density of 25,790 persons per square mile. Hurricane Maria Hurricane Maria which hit Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017 devastated Obrero with major flooding and winds that tore roofs off homes. Héctor Andrés Negroni
Colonel Héctor Andrés Negroni (born January 30, 1938) is a United States Air Force officer, historian, senior aerospace defense executive, author, and the first Puerto Rican graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. He was commissioned by Spain's Fifth Centennial Commission to write the "''Historia Militar de Puerto Rico''" (A Military History of Puerto Rico). Early years Negroni was born in the town of Yauco, Puerto Rico, which is located in the southwestern region of the island. There he received his primary education. Residencial Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas, more commonly known as Residencial Las Casas, Caserio Las Casas or Las Casas, is a public housing complex located in San Juan, Puerto Rico consisting of 417 housing units. It is under the management of the Puerto Rico Housing Authority (''Administración de Vivienda Pública'' in Spanish) and is under the federal housing program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It was named after the famous Spaniard Roman Catholic Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas, who also has a town named after him in Mexico, namely San Cristóbal de las Casas. The Complex is located in an area that was used by the United States military beginning in 1908, as a training camp for the Porto Rico Regiment of Infantry that saw action in World War I and World War II. 65th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 65th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed "The Borinqueneers" during the Korean War for the original Taíno Indian name for Puerto Rico (Borinquen), is a Puerto Rican regiment of the United States Army. The regiment's motto is ''Honor et Fidelitas'', Latin for ''Honor and Fidelity''. The Army Appropriation Bill created by an act of Congress on 2 March 1899, authorized the creation of the first body of native troops in Puerto Rico. On 30 June 1901, the "Porto Rico Provisional Regiment of Infantry" was organized. On 1 July 1908, Congress incorporated the regiment into the Regular Army as the Puerto Rico Regiment of Infantry, United States Army.
