Wallace Downey
Wallace Downey (New York City, May 14, 1902 – New York City, January 29, 1978) was an American film producer and director. In 1928 Wallace Downey, an executive of Columbia Records, was sent to South America to install a Brazilian branch for his company. He quickly realized Brazil was an entertainment hot bed for potential markets in records and films. Cinemateca Brasileira
The Cinemateca Brasileira is the institution responsible for preserving Brazilian audiovisual production. In July 2021, it experienced a major fire. Since 1940, it has been developing activities around the dissemination and restoration of its collection, with around 250 thousand rolls of films and more than one million documents related to cinema. It is located in Largo Senador Raul Cardoso, São Paulo. The building previously acted as the Old Municipal Slaughterhouse of São Paulo from 1887 to 1927. It had the largest collection of "moving images" in Latin America and is one of the largest institutions of its kind in the world. It preserved a large part of the nation's cinematographic content and houses the greatest collection of Brazilian cinema, with more than 250,000 rolls of film. Dircinha Batista
Dirce Grandino de Oliveira (April 7, 1922 – June 18, 1999), known as Dircinha Batista, was a Brazilian actress and singer. Biography Daughter of the singer/composer/ventriloquist Batista Júnior and sister of Linda Batista, Dircinha Batista was a very successful Brazilian singer. In a career of more than forty years she recorded over three hundred 78RPM discs with many big hits, especially Carnaval songs. She worked in sixteen Brazilian movies and was a child prodigy. Dircinha began performing at festivals at age six. She began to participate in her father's shows in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo beginning in 1928. Grande Otelo
Grande Otelo (October 18, 1915 – November 26, 1993) was the stage name of Brazilian actor, comedian, singer, and composer Sebastião Bernardes de Souza Prata. Otelo was born in Uberlândia, and was orphaned as a child. He kept running away from the families that adopted him; only when he took up art did his life become settled. Grande Otelo started his film career in 1935 in the movie ''Noites Cariocas''. He was also renowned for the comic duo he formed with Oscarito. Carmen Miranda, (; born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha, 9 February 1909 – 5 August 1955) was a Portuguese-born Brazilian samba singer, dancer, Broadway actress and film star who was active from the late 1920s onwards. Nicknamed "The Brazilian Bombshell", Miranda was known for her signature fruit hat outfit that she wore in her American films.
