Lanyon is a hamlet in the parish of Madron in Cornwall, England, UK. It is situated on a north facing slope on the Madron to Morvah road. The nearest town is Penzance to the south. Toponymy Lanyon derives from ''Lyn yeyn'' in the Cornish language meaning cold pool. It has been previously written as Liniein, Leniein, Lenien (all three in 1214), Linyeine (1244), Lenyen (1285), Lynyeyn (1326), Lanyayn (1443) and Lennyen (1447). In 1878, Wayfarer in The Cornishman, and in 1880 William Bottrell states the name was pronounced as ''La-nine'' and ''Lanine'' respectively. The Lanyon surname originates from the hamlet and there are places in the parishes of Gwinear and Illogan where the name was taken by a branch of the family. Carlton Dawe
William Carlton Lanyon Dawe, generally known as Carlton Dawe (30 July 1865 – 30 May 1935), was a prolific Australian author of over 70 books including romance, mystery and crime. Biography William was born in Moonta, South Australia in 1865 to Henry Dawe and Francis Lanyon. Dawe was born in Adelaide and came from an old Cornish family. He grew up with his sister, Gwendoline Lanyon Dawe. Dawe came to Melbourne with his parents around 1880. In 1885, he published in ''Sydonia and other Poems'' in London, beginning a trend of publishing novels in both this city and his local Melbourne. In 1886 ''Love and the World and other Poems'' was published in Melbourne. As these poems were possibly considered no more than average quality, they did not suggest any particular promise. Lanyon is an unincorporated community in Lost Grove Township in Webster County, Iowa. Geography It is located 17 miles south of the county seat of Fort Dodge, 2.65 miles south and one mile west of Harcourt (on U.S. Route 169), and 3.3 miles north and 4.5 miles west of Boxholm. Lanyon consists of seven blocks, bounded on the north by 390th Street, and on the east by Lanyon Avenue. Lanyon's elevation is 1,171 feet (357 m). History The community was founded by Swedish emigrants, part of a migration from Knox County, Illinois in the 1860s. It is located on the diagonal route of a former interurban railroad between Boone and Rockwell City, which was used by the Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern Railroad until the 1960s. A station at Layton was opened in 1899 to serve a railway laid that year by the Marshalltown and Dakota Railroad Company to carry coal mined near Fraser northwest to connections at Gowrie. West Lanyon Quoit, also known as Lower Lanyon Quoit, is the remains of a prehistoric dolmen situated in the parish of Madron in Cornwall . It was excavated in the late 18th century, and much of the structure has since been destroyed. Location West Lanyon Quoit is located northwest of Penzance near the road between Madron and Morvah. Lanyon Quoit is a dolmen in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, 2 miles southeast of Morvah. It collapsed in a storm in 1815 and was re-erected nine years later, and as a result the dolmen is now very different from its original appearance. Location Lanyon Quoit is located northwest of Penzance on the road between Madron and Morvah. Lanyon Homestead
Lanyon is an historic homestead and grazing property located on the southern outskirts of Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory. History The site was first occupied following white settlement by Timothy Beard, who depastured cattle on the Limestone Plains as early as 1829. Beard had been transported to Australia for life and arrived in the colony in 1806. After receiving his pardon he entered the pastoral industry as a squatter. Beard's huts were located on the Molonglo River near Queanbeyan and on the site of Lanyon homestead. Beard was forced out of the area by land grants and later became an innkeeper at Bringelly (Moore, 1982). The Wright family James Wright and his friend John Hamilton Mortimer Lanyon settled at Lanyon in 1833 as squatters after arriving from London earlier that year.
