Nicholas Lanier
Nicholas Lanier, sometimes Laniere (baptised 10 September 1588 – buried 24 February 1666) was an English composer and musician; the first to hold the title of Master of the King's Music from 1625 to 1666, an honour given to musicians of great distinction. He was the court musician, a composer and performer and Groom of the Chamber in the service of King Charles I and Charles II. He was also a singer, lutenist, scenographer and painter. Biography Nicholas Lanier was a descendant of a French family of royal musicians, the Lanière family, who were Huguenots, and was baptised at Greenwich. His father and grandfather left France to escape persecutions. His aunt, Emilia Bassano, was the daughter of Venetian musicians at the Tudor court and before her marriage to Alfonso Lanier had been the mistress to the Lord Chamberlain, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth I and, possibly Henry Wriothesly, Earl of Southampton. Nicholas Lanier The Elder
Nicholas Lanier the Elder (d. 1612) was a French musician who played the flute and the cornett. Life Lanier came originally from Rouen, France, and died in England in 1612 . He served as a court musician to King Henry II of France in France (listed as the royal flutist on the Chantres et autres Jouers d'instruments for 1559-60). During the Protestant persecutions in France, the Lanier family fled as Huguenots to England. Nicholas arrived in 1561 and settled in the parish of St. Olave's, Hart Street, London. After arrival in England he served in the court of Queen Elizabeth I of England, reported first in 1561 . The name of Lanier's first wife is unknown (he married her some time before 1565), but following the custom then at court, marriages were arranged or at least approved by the Queen. Max Lanier
Hubert Max Lanier (August 18, 1915 – January 30, 2007) was an American left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who spent most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. He led the National League in earned run average in 1943, and was the winning pitcher of the clinching game in the 1944 World Series against the crosstown St. Louis Browns. His son Hal became a major league infielder and manager. Career Born in Denton, North Carolina, Lanier was one of a handful of players who remained active during the World War II years. A naturally right-handed player, he had become a left-handed pitcher only because he twice broke his right arm in childhood. After signing with the Cardinals in 1937, he reached the major leagues in 1938. He had arguably his best season in 1943, compiling a 15–7 record with a league-best 1.90 ERA. John Lanier
Lieutenant-General Sir John Lanier (died 1692) was an English army officer. Military career Lanier was wounded and lost an eye while serving under the Duke of Monmouth in France. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Jersey from 1679 to 1684. In 1685 he raised Lanier's Regiment of Horse or the 2nd Queen's Regiment of Horse, named in honour of Queen Mary, consort of King James II, as part of the response to the Monmouth Rebellion. He declared allegiance to William III and secured Edinburgh Castle for him in 1689.
