Lane (crater)
Lane is a lunar impact crater. It lies on the far side of the Moon, just to the west of the crater Ten Bruggencate. To the west of Lane is Perepelkin, and to the northwest lies Love. This crater is not heavily eroded, but the rim is somewhat disrupted at the northern and southern ends. To the south the rim has a prominent outward bulge that extends an extra 5–10 km. The interior is somewhat uneven, with low central ridges near the midpoint. Apollo 17 (December 7–19, 1972) was the final mission of NASA's Apollo program, the most recent time humans have set foot on the Moon or traveled beyond low Earth orbit. Commander Gene Cernan and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt walked on the Moon, while Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans (astronaut), Ronald Evans orbited above. Jonathan Homer Lane
Jonathan Homer Lane (August 9, 1819 – May 3, 1880) was an American astrophysicist and inventor. Biography Lane's parents were Mark and Henrietta (née Tenny) Lane and his education was at the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. He graduated from Yale University in 1846. While at Yale, Lane studied under astronomer Denison Olmsted. Olmsted’s interest in meteorology, particularly his support for James P. Espy’s thermodynamic model of storms, appear to closely parallel Lane’s later scientific interests and may have influenced him in that direction. Lane worked for the U.S. Patent Office, and became a principal examiner in 1851, continuing in that position until forced out by a change of political administrations in 1857. The far side of the Moon is the lunar hemisphere that always faces away from Earth, opposite to the near side, because of synchronous rotation in the Moon's orbit. Compared to the near side, the far side's terrain is rugged, with a multitude of impact craters and relatively few flat and dark lunar maria ("seas"), giving it an appearance closer to other barren places in the Solar System such as Mercury and Callisto. Ten Bruggencate (crater)
Ten Bruggencate is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon from the Earth, just to the east of the younger crater Lane. To the southeast of Ten Bruggencate is Chauvenet. This is a worn and eroded formation, with the satellite crater Ten Bruggencate H overlapping part of the side to the east-southeast. Perepelkin (lunar Crater)
Perepelkin is a lunar impact crater that is located just to the south of the similar crater Love. Attached to the exterior of its southern rim is the smaller Shirakatsi. Less than one crater diameter to the east-northeast is Lane, and to the west-southwest are the co-joined Danjon and D'Arsonval. The rim of this crater is relatively heavily eroded, and is similar in appearance to Love to the north. Along the western inner wall is an odd, pear-shaped crater that is probably a merge of two impacts. There is a short chain of small craters along the southwestern inner wall. The floor is pitted by tiny impacts, but is relatively level compared to the surrounding terrain. There is a small central peak at the midpoint that has a ridge extension to the southeast.
