Lake Tohmajärvi is a medium-sized shallow lake in the Tohmajoki main catchment area. It is located in the North Karelia region, in the very east of Finland, just outside the town of Tohmajärvi next to the border with Russia. North Karelia
North Karelia (or ''Northern Karelia'', ; ) is a region in eastern Finland. It borders the regions of Kainuu, North Savo, South Savo and South Karelia, as well as Russia's Republic of Karelia. Tohmajärvi () is a municipality of Finland. It is located in the North Karelia region. The municipality has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Neighbouring municipalities are Joensuu, Kitee and Rääkkylä. The municipality of Värtsilä was consolidated with Tohmajärvi in 2005. Sortavala, a town in the Karelia, Russia, is located south of Tohmajärvi.
