Lake Lillian is a lake in Kandiyohi County, in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Lake Lillian was named for the wife of Edwin Whitefield, an artist who visited the area with explorers in the 1850s. Kandiyohi County, Minnesota
Kandiyohi County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, its population is 43,732. As of November 20, 1871, its county seat is Willmar. Kandiyohi County comprises the US Census Bureau's "Willmar, MN Micropolitan Statistical Area". History Kandiyohi County is named for a Dakota word meaning "where the buffalo fish come". (''kandi’'' - the buffalo fish + ''oh-hi’-yu'' - v. of ''hiyu'' - to come through). It was organized on March 20, 1858, with Kandiyohi established as the county seat in 1870 (it was then called Kandiyohi Station, as it was merely a stop on the railroad line). The original county occupied only the southern half of its current area. Development was slow, and in 1870 the state legislature called for Monongalia County to merge with Kandiyohi. Edwin Whitefield
Edwin Whitefield (September 22, 1816 – December 26, 1892) was a landscape artist who is best known for his lithographed views of North American cities and for a number of illustrated books on colonial homes in New England. Born in East Lulworth, near Wareham, Dorset, England, he emigrated to the United States in 1838. Whitefield visited a series of North American cities, where he published books reproducing the paintings he made there. His collections were published by subscription. The cities he visited included Brooklyn (1845), Toronto (1851), Quebec City (1852), Montreal (1853-1854), Hamilton, Ontario (1854), Ithaca, New York (1855), Jamestown (1882), and Boston (1889). In 1856, after visiting Minnesota, he made it his home, using landscapes to help persuade those seeking land to let him play a role in their purchases. Lake Lillian, Minnesota
Lake Lillian is a city in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 238 at the 2010 census. History The town of Lake Lillian formed in February 1923 when railroad tracks were laid for the Luce Line Railroad. The name Lake Lillian came from the nearby lake Lake Lillian. The lake was named after Lillian Whitefield, wife of Edwin Whitefield who explored this area in 1856. The town was incorporated on February 25, 1926. The first school was built in Lake Lillian in 1913. In 1926, there was a report of oil being discovered in the city limits. During World War II, a hemp processing plan was built near Lake Lillian to help the war effort. In 1955, a new school was built. In 1965, Lake Lillian voted to approve the sale of liquor.
