Lake Isabel (Colorado)
Lake Isabel is a reservoir located in the San Isabel National Forest in Pueblo and Custer counties, in Colorado, United States. The lake is in the Wet Mountains. The lake is open to fishing year round and is regularly stocked by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Available activities include fishing, hiking, camping and sledding in the winter. The community of San Isabel lies on the north side of the lake, in Custer County. The border between Pueblo and Custer counties runs north–south through the east side of the lake, such that most of the dam is in Pueblo County (on the east side), and most of the reservoir itself is in Custer County (on the west side). History The earthen dam and reservoir were built in the 1930s to store water for the CF&I Steel plant in Pueblo. Now the lake and the area surrounding it are managed by the United States Forest Service as the Lake Isabel Recreation Area. Custer County, Colorado
Custer County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,704. The county seat is Westcliffe. History Custer County was created by the Colorado legislature on March 9, 1877, out of the southern half of Fremont County. It was named in honor of Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, who had died the previous year. Originally set in Ula, the county seat moved to Rosita in 1878, and to Silver Cliff in 1886 before settling in Westcliffe in 1928. The county was the site of a silver rush during the 1870s. Thousands of men poured into the county during this time in the hunt for silver. San Isabel National Forest is located in central Colorado. The forest contains 19 of the state's 53 fourteeners, peaks over high, including Mount Elbert, the highest point in Colorado. It is one of eleven national forests in the state of Colorado and contains the Sawatch Range, the Collegiate Peaks, and Sangre de Cristo Range. Wet Mountains
The Wet Mountains are a small mountain range in southern Colorado, named for the amount of snow they receive in the winter as compared to the dried Great Plains to the east. They are a sub-range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, in the southern Rocky Mountains System. There are three variant names of mountain range: Cuerno Verde, Greenhorn Mountains, and Sierra Mojada.
