Lake Gitamo
Lake Gitamo (french: Lac Gitamo, ), or Lake Nagitamo is a lake in the Kirundo Province of Burundi. Location Lake Gitamo is in the Commune of Bugabira. It empties into a marshy corridor that leads from Lake Rwihinda and Lake Narungazi to the Akanyaru River. Kirundo Province
Kirundo Province is one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi. Kirundo has three big lakes: Cohoha, Rweru, and Rwihinda. Lakes Cohoha and Rweru are located in commune Busone, and Lake Rwihinda is in commune Kirundo. Kirundo is the capital city of province Kirundo. Before the climate change, Kirundo was the richest province because of its productive land. Now Kirundo is no longer productive. The climate change devastate the province forever. Lake Rwihinda
Lake Rwihinda (french: Lac Rwihinda, ), also known as the ''Lac aux Oiseaux'' (Bird Lake) is a lake in the Kirundo Province of Burundi. It is home to diverse migratory birds, which are the main tourist attraction in the region. However, despite being protected, it is under threat from encroaching agriculture in this very poor region. Location Lake Rwihinda is in the Commune of Kirundo, to the north of the provincial capital of Kirundo. It covers and is above sea level. Mutawenzi and the Mutawenzi Military Camp are just south of the lake. The Kirundo Airport and the settlement of Rutare are to the northeast. A marshy strip leads northwest to the Akanyaru River. Lake Narungazi and Lake Gitamo also drain into this marshy strip. Lake Narungazi (french: Lac Narungazi), or Lake Narugazi, Lake Narunganzi, is a lake in the Commune of Ntega in Kirundo Province of Burundi. Location Lake Narungazi is in the Commune of Ntega, Kirundo Province, to the east of Mugendo. It is west of Lake Rwihinda and south of Lake Nagitamo. Akanyaru River
The Akanyaru River is the main tributary of the Nyabarongo River. It rises in the western highlands of Rwanda and Burundi, flows east and then north along the border between those countries before joining the Nyabarongo River. The lower stretches contain important but unprotected wetlands, which are under threat from human activity. Course The Mugere River, a major headwater, rises at an elevation of in Burundi. The river has sources at about elevation in the south of Rwanda. Many of the valleys of the higher tributaries are choked by papyrus, which contains seasonal swamp forests. The upstream portion of the river has a catchment area of about . The lower course of the river is a belt of permanent wetlands about wide that ends where it reaches the Nyabarongo River. Lake Gacamirindi
Lake Gacamirindi (french: Lac Gacamirindi, ), or Lake Gacamirinda, is a lake in the Kirundo Province of Burundi. Location Lake Gacamirindi is in the Commune of Bugabira, Kirundo Province. The lake covers an area of , and is set between hills with fairly steep slopes. It is surrounded by the densely populated '' collines'' of Kiri and Nyakarama. In the past the lake merged into a marshy area beside the Akanyaru River. Now banana and sorghum are cultivated both upstream and downstream of the lake. Lake Gacamirindi would normally be fed by the waters of the Akanyaru river, but as of 2011 was separated from this river by farmland and had become a small pond of a few hectares. ''Typha domingensis'' forms a very narrow belt around this pond, separating the crops and the water. Lake Gacamirindi dried up in 2004, a period of normal precipitation.
