Kirundo Province
Kirundo Province is one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi. Kirundo has three big lakes: Cohoha, Rweru, and Rwihinda. Lakes Cohoha and Rweru are located in commune Busone, and Lake Rwihinda is in commune Kirundo. Kirundo is the capital city of province Kirundo. Before the climate change, Kirundo was the richest province because of its productive land. Now Kirundo is no longer productive. The climate change devastate the province forever. In fifteen years those three lakes are almost half evaporated. It is the northernmost province and it shares an international border with Rwanda. Provinces Of Burundi
Burundi is divided into eighteen provinces, each named after their respective capital with the exception of Bujumbura Rural. Burundi’s provinces and communes were created on Christmas Day in 1959 by a Belgian colonial decree. They replaced the pre-existing system of chieftains. In 2000, the province encompassing Bujumbura was separated into two provinces, Bujumbura Rural and Bujumbura Mairie.Eggers, p. xlix. The newest province, Rumonge, was created on 26 March 2015 from portions of Bujumbura Rural and Bururi. In July 2022, the government of Burundi announced a complete overhaul of the country’s territorial subdivisions. The proposed change would reduce the amounts of provinces from 18 to 5, and reduce the amount of communes from 119 to 42. The change needs the approval of the National Assembly and the Senate to take effect. Lake Cohoha
Lake Cyohoha South or Cyohoha Sud as it is known in Rwanda or Lake Cohoha in Burundi is a small lake in East Africa. It straddles the border between Burundi and Rwanda. In Rwanda, it is known as Cyohoha South to differentiate it from the nearby much smaller Cyohoha North 10 miles North into Rwanda. In Burundi, it is simply known as Cohoha. It is a narrow yet very long lake with many branches. It is in length, and has an average of in width (maximum width is ). It is largely bisected by the border between Rwanda and Burundi, however, its southern portion extends entirely into Burundi. The lake is , of which are in Rwanda and belong to Burundi. Lake Rweru
Lake Rweru is a lake close to the northernmost point of Burundi in central Africa. The northern shore of the lake forms part of Burundi's border with Rwanda. It is the most distant origin point of the Nile River. The Kagera River, considered by many as the start point of the Nile, rises at the northern part of the lake, located in Rwanda. Geography The lake has a surface area of between two countries, Burundi () and Rwanda (). The lake has a shoreline of approximately 76 km. The lake is very shallow in most parts and has a mean depth of 2.1 m with its maximum depth at 3 m located in Burundi. The Kagera River flows out of the lake in Burundi and flows east along Rwanda's border until it joins the Ruvubu River.
