''Lagostomus crassus'' is an extinct species of viscacha that was native to Peru , image_flag = Flag of Peru.svg , image_coat = Escudo nacional del Perú.svg , other_symbol = Great Seal of the State , other_symbol_type = Seal (emblem), National seal , national_motto = "Fi .... It is known from a single skull found in southern Peru. The skull is not in any way fossilized, indicating that the animal it belonged to lived very recently. The skull is also identical to that of the extant plains viscacha, being comparable in size to that of a large individual. Based on the above factors, it is probable that ''Lagostomus crassus'' is not a valid taxon, and merely a plains viscacha that was transported to Peru in ancient times. The family Chinchillidae is in the order Rodentia and consists of the chinchillas, the viscachas, and their fossil relatives. This family is restricted to southern and western South America, mostly living in mountainous regions of the Andes but one species living on plains. Johann Rudolph Rengger
Johann Rudolph Rengger was a Swiss naturalist and doctor, author of a book on exploration in Paraguay. He published a work on the physiology of insects. He also studied the fauna of Paraguay, and published in 1835 a ''Reise nach Paraguay in den Jahren 1818 bis 1826''. Early life Johann Rudolf Rengger was born in Baden as the son of the pastor Samuel Rengger. Since his parents died early, his uncle Albrecht Rengger, then Interior Minister of the Helvetic Republic, provided his education, first at a private school, and then at the canton school of Aarau from 1805 to 1812. He later studied natural sciences and medicine in Lausanne and Tübingen. In 1817 he published the results of his research on insects under the title ''Physiological investigations on the animal housekeeping of Insects'' and thus earned on October 12 of the same year the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Joshua Brookes (24 November 1761 – 10 January 1833) was a British anatomist and naturalist. Early life Brookes studied under William Hunter, William Hewson, Andrew Marshall, and John Sheldon, in London. He then attended the practice of Antoine Portal and other eminent surgeons at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris. Brookesian Museum Brookes became a teacher of anatomy in London, and the founder of the Brookesian Museum of Comparative Anatomy. This private museum is described in the 1830 catalogue ''Museum Brookesianum''. Later life Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1819, Brookes gave up teaching in 1826, in bad health. After vainly endeavouring to dispose of his museum collection entire, he sold it off piecemeal. The final sale took place on 1 March 1830, and on 22 following days.
