Lagos International Poetry Festival
The Lagos International Poetry Festival, also often called LIPFest, is an annual festival of poetry which takes place in Lagos, Nigeria. Referred to as "an annual haven for Nigerian and international creatives, especially poets,” LIPFest was founded by Efe Paul Azino, a Nigerian spoken word artist and poet, to bring together an international array of poets, writers, artists, and public intellectuals to Lagos for a week of readings and performances, panel discussions, workshops, community outreaches, and a celebration of the art of poetry in general. Aja Monet (/ adʒa moʊˈneɪ/ Ah-Zjhah Mow-nay), (sometimes stylized in all lowercase), is an American contemporary poet, writer, lyricist and activist based in Los Angeles, California. Early life Monet began writing poetry at age 8, due to her fascination with storytelling and typewriters. She started performing poetry in high school at Baruch College Campus High School in Manhattan. One of her first poetic memories was when she wrote a poem for a class that compelled the teacher, who encouraged Monet to continue writing. Monet competed with a poem for her high school talent show, and won, bringing her teachers to tears. She created the club SABA, Students Acknowledging Black Achievements, and got involved with the organization, Urban Word NYC, who taught Monet that poetry could be a career. Victoria Adukwei Bulley
Victoria Adukwei Bulley is a British-born Ghanaian poet. Early life and education Bulley is of Ghanaian heritage, born and brought up in Essex, England. In 2019, she was awarded a Techne scholarship for doctoral work at Royal Holloway, University of London. An alumna of The Complete Works poetry mentoring programme initiated by Bernardine Evaristo, Bulley has held residencies internationally in the US, Brazil, and at the V&A. Jumoke Verissimo (born 26 December 1979 in Lagos) is a Nigerian poet, novelist, children's writer and critic. Life Jumoke was born in Lagos. Koleka Putuma (born in Port Elizabeth, 22 March 1993) is a South African queer poet and theatre-maker. She was nominated one of Okay Africa's most influential women in 2019. Biography Putuma was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1993. She studied for a BA in Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town. In 2016 she was awarded the PEN student writing prize for her poem 'Water'. This poem is used in schools as a reminder that access to water is political, historical and racialized. Kaveh Akbar (کاوه اکبر) is an Iranian-American poet and scholar. Early life and education Akbar was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1989, and grew up across the United States including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Indiana. He moved to the United States when he was only two years old. Before he moved to the U.S., his parents taught him how to talk by reading Muslim prayers.
