"Lady Godiva" is a popular song originally recorded and released in 1966 as a single by British pop duo Peter and Gordon. Though it only made it to No. 16 in the UK, it became one of the duo's greatest successes in the United States, rising to No. 6 in December 1966. Content The song is a music hall-style number which frivolously references the legend of Lady Godiva, re-imagining it in the modern day: a film director from Hollywood witnesses her legendary ride (with "her long blonde hair" obscuring her breasts and other private parts) and recruits the lady to star in his movie. It is revealed in the third verse that he directs pornographic films, thus attracting a seemingly large crowd who are "craning their necks" to see the lady. Peter and Gordon were a British pop duo, composed of Peter Asher (b. 1944) and Gordon Waller (1945–2009), who achieved international fame in 1964 with their first single, the million-selling single "A World Without Love". Paul Jones (born Paul Pond, 24 February 1942) is an English singer, actor, harmonicist, radio personality and television presenter. He first came to prominence as the original lead singer and harmonicist of the rock band Manfred Mann (1962–66) with whom he had several hit records including "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" ( UK #1, US #1) and "Pretty Flamingo" (UK #1). "I Go to Pieces" is a song written by Del Shannon which became a Top Ten hit for Peter and Gordon on 20 February 1965. The duo's fourth single, it was their first not to be written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Del Shannon Del Shannon had written "I Go to Pieces" for an R&B singer named Lloyd Brown whom Shannon discovered at a Michigan nightclub. Shannon arranged and produced Brown's recording but was unable to find a label interested in releasing the track. Shannon did attempt to record "I Go to Pieces" in the August 1964 session at Mira Sound Studios NYC, which yielded his single "Do You Wanna Dance" and its B-side "This is All I Have to Give."
