''Laccocephalum basilapidoides'', referred to as the stone-making fungus, is a fungus known only from Australia. Taxonomy The species was originally described in 1895 by Daniel McAlpine & Tepper. American mycologist Curtis Gates Lloyd transferred it to the genus '' Polyporus'' in 1912, but the original name has nomenclatural precedence. Characteristics ''Laccocephalum basilapidoides'' is a solitary fungus with annual hymenophore. The woody and pitted pileus (13/4-15/4 inches in diameter) is irregularly concave in the middle while convex in the remainder. The pileus is brownish fawn with coffee-colored margin, the inner substance of which, however, is thick, whitish, and unchangeable. Pits are relatively small and conical in the middle whereas larger and elliptical in the surrounding rows. Daniel McAlpine
Daniel McAlpine (21 January 1849 – 12 October 1932) was a Scottish-born Australian mycologist known for his research in plant pathology. He wrote several publications on plant disease in many crops and other plants. McAlpine was a lecturer in biology at the University of Melbourne from 1884, and, with his appointment to the Victorian Department of Agriculture from 1890 to 1911, became the British Empire's first professional plant pathologist. Early life He was born in Saltcoats, Scotland, the third son of schoolmaster Daniel McAlpine and his wife Flora. The young Daniel attended Ardeer School, where his father taught. Curtis Gates Lloyd
Curtis Gates Lloyd (July 17, 1859 – November 11, 1926) was an American mycologist known for both his research on the gasteroid and polypore fungi, as well as his controversial views on naming conventions in taxonomy. He had a herbarium with about 60,000 fungal specimens, and described over a thousand new species of fungi. Along with his two brothers John Uri Lloyd and Nelson Ashley Lloyd, he founded the Lloyd Library and Museum in Cincinnati. Early life Born on July 17, 1859 in Florence, Kentucky, Curtis Gates Lloyd was the third son of Nelson Marvin and Sophia Webster Lloyd. Fungal colonies composed of mycelium are found in and on soil and many other substrate (biology), substrates. Polyporaceae
The Polyporaceae are a family of poroid fungi belonging to the Basidiomycota. The flesh of their fruit bodies varies from soft (as in the case of the dryad's saddle illustrated) to very tough. Most members of this family have their hymenium (fertile layer) in vertical pores on the underside of the caps, but some of them have gills (e.g. ''Panus'') or gill-like structures (such as ''Daedaleopsis'', whose elongated pores form a corky labyrinth).
