Lab Synthèse
Lab Synthèse was an arts collective and venue space in Montreal, Quebec during the late 2000s. It was located at 435 Beaubien Ouest. Sebastian Cowan, Yan Basque, David Peet and Carlos Chancellor founded the space in 2007 after discovering a 4600 square foot loft in an abandoned textile manufacturing warehouse. One year after its inception David Peet committed suicide, resulting in the departure of Basque and Chancellor from the collective. They were replaced by the painter Ezra Gray, musician Jeff Boyd, film director Emily Kai Bock and musician Alexander Cowan (who later founded Blue Hawaii). The collective hosted a series of live music concerts, art exhibitions and free weekly film screenings, and grew to become a hub for artists living around the Mile End neighbourhood. Arts Collective
An artist collective is an initiative that is the result of a group of artists working together, usually under their own management, towards shared aims. The aims of an artist collective can include almost anything that is relevant to the needs of the artist; this can range from purchasing bulk materials, sharing equipment, space or materials, to following shared ideologies, aesthetic and political views or even living and working together as an extended family. Sharing of ownership, risk, benefits, and status is implied, as opposed to other, more common business structures with an explicit hierarchy of ownership such as an association or a company. A film director controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the screenplay (or script) while guiding the film crew and actors in the fulfilment of that vision. Emily Kai Bock
Emily Kai Bock (born 1983 or 1984) is a Canadian writer and film director. In 2017, her short film '' A Funeral for Lightning'' was included in TIFF's annual Canada's Top Ten list of the top 10 Canadian short films of the year, selected by a panel of filmmakers and industry professionals. It went on to be nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Live Action Short Drama, and won the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film at the LA Film Festival and an honorable mention for Best U.S. Short and Best Tennessee Short at the Nashville Film Festival. Blue Hawaii (band)
Blue Hawaii are a Canadian electronic music duo from Montreal, Quebec, composed of Braids member Raphaelle "Ra" Standell-Preston and Alex "Agor" Kerby (also known as Alexander Cowan). Mile End is a neighbourhood and municipal electoral district in the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is part of the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough in terms of Montreal's municipal politics. Arbutus Records
Arbutus Records is a Montreal based record label and Artist Management, management company founded by Sebastian Cowan in 2009. The label is named after the street by the same name in Vancouver, where Cowan grew up. The label have also begun expanding outside of Montreal, signing international artist Σtella, from Athens, Greece, on April 16, 2019, and Toronto-based trio Rapport on August 28, 2019. History Arbutus Records was created by a community of artists and musicians from the Montreal DIY music scene that came together in the 4600 square foot Mile End, Montreal, Mile End, warehouse loft space called Lab Synthèse. Claire Elise Boucher (; born March 17, 1988), known professionally as Grimes, is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer.
