''La Singla'' is a 2023 Spanish-German documentary film written and directed by Paloma Zapata about Flamenco dancer Antonia Singla. Plot The film explores the career of deaf Romani flamenco ''bailaora'' La Singla, following the research on the subject carried out by young flamenco teacher and writer Helena. Cast Production The film is a Spanish-German co-production by La Fábrica Naranja, Malandar Films and Inselfilm Produktion and it had the participation of Arte/ZDF, Canal Sur, TVC and Movistar Plus+, and backing from ICEC, ICAA, and Creative Europe's MEDIA. Release The film premiered at the 25th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival in March 2023. It also screened at the Teatro Cervantes during the 26th Málaga Film Festival on 15 March 2023. Distributed by Atera Films, it was released theatrically in Spain on 10 November 2023. Antoñita Singla
Antoñita Singla (born 1948), is a Spanish-born Romani flamenco dancer and actress. She often went by the stage name Antoñita La Singla or simply "La Singla" but sometimes its written as Antonia Singla. Early life She was born as Antonia Singla Contreras in 1948 in the neighborhood Somorrostro de la Barceloneta, in Barcelona, Spain. At the time of her birth, this neighborhood was a shanty town and a gypsy community. A few days after her birth she was in pain so her mother took her to many hospitals in order to see different doctors. Despite the examinations, no accurate medical diagnosis was found. It was thought that the pain was caused by severe meningitis, however, the little girl was left deaf as a result of the pain she had during her first months. In 1968, she made a partial recovery from her medical condition. While she was growing up, La Singla learned to dance rumba, fandango, bulerías and flamenco with considerable skill.
