''La Llorona'' is the debut studio album by Canada, Canadian singer Lhasa de Sela, released in 1997 in Canada and 1998 elsewhere. Concept Alejandro Sela, Lhasa's father, received his doctorate on literature of the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire and taught her of the legend of La Llorona. This is the folktale of the crying woman, resembled the mythological wife of Quetzalcoatl who has lost her children. For Lhasa, La Llorona comes from the omen of conquerors. Lhasa believes that the woman cried when the Spanish arrived in America to warn her native children of the doom that the conquistadors would bring to their way of life. Alberto Ginastera
Alberto Evaristo Ginastera (; April 11, 1916June 25, 1983) was an Argentinian composer of classical music. He is considered to be one of the most important 20th-century classical composers of the Americas. Biography Ginastera was born in Buenos Aires to a Spanish father and an Italian mother. During his later years, he preferred to use the Catalan and Italian pronunciation of his surname – , with an initial soft 'G' like that of English 'George' – rather than with a Spanish 'J' sound (). Ginastera studied at the Williams Conservatory in Buenos Aires, graduating in 1938. As a young professor, he taught at the Liceo Militar General San Martín. ''La Llorona'' (; "The Weeping Woman" or "The Wailer") is a Hispanic-American mythical vengeful ghost who is said to roam near bodies of water mourning her children whom she drowned. Origins Early colonial times provided evidence that the lore is pre-Hispanic, originating in the central highlands. However, La ''Llorona'' is most commonly associated with the colonial era and the dynamic between Spanish ''conquistadores'' and indigenous women. The most common lore about La ''Llorona'' includes her initially being an Indigenous woman who murdered her own children, which she bore from a wealthy Spaniard, after he abandoned her. Lhasa De Sela
Lhasa de Sela (September 27, 1972 – January 1, 2010), also known by the mononym Lhasa, was an American-Canadian singer-songwriter who was raised in Mexico and the United States and divided her adult life between Canada and France. Her first album, '' La Llorona'', went Platinum in Canada and brought Lhasa a Félix Award and a Juno Award. Following this success, Lhasa toured with Lilith Fair and then joined her sisters in a French circus troupe, contributing her husky voice to the musical backdrop. She lived in Marseille and began to write more songs, then she moved back to Montreal and produced a second album, '' The Living Road''. Once again, she toured in support of her album and collaborated with other musicians on their projects. During this time, BBC Radio 3 honoured her as the best world music artist of the Americas in 2005. She published a book about her impressions of life on the road. Audiogram is an independent record label founded in Quebec in 1984. The label represents performers who have contributed to and have marked Quebec's cultural scene. In the 1990s, Audiogram became home to many of the top local French artists and in 1993 expanded into the English-speaking Canadian market with Montreal rock group Gogh Van Go. By 1997, Audiogram had a full slate of multicultural and multilingual releases.
