La Isabela International Airport
La Isabela International Airport opened in 23 February 2006 to replace Herrera International Airport. The first flight to land at the airport was a Caribair flight from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It primarily serves the Dominican Republic with domestic flights and some international flights to other Caribbean islands. La Isabela Airport is the major hub for Dominican airlines that operate small aircraft. The airport has the largest number of hangars in the country (+40) for Dominican-based carriers. It is, as of June 2020, also the only airport in Santo Domingo that serves domestic destinations, as Las Americas International Airport, the other airport serving Santo Domingo, lacks domestic air service. Punta Cana International Airport is a privately owned commercial airport in Punta Cana, eastern Dominican Republic. The airport was built with open-air terminals and roofs covered in palm fronds. Grupo Punta Cana built the airport, which was designed by architect Oscar Imbert, and inaugurated it in December 1983. It is owned by Grupo Punta Cana and became the first privately owned international airport in the world. The airport is the busiest in the Dominican Republic, and the second-busiest of the Caribbean, only behind Puerto Rico's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. Douglas–Charles Airport , formerly known as Melville Hall Airport, is an airport located on the northeast coast of Dominica, northwest of Marigot. It is about one hour away from the second largest city Portsmouth. It is one of only two airports in the island nation of Dominica, the other being Canefield Airport located three miles (5 km) northeast of Roseau. History The Melville Hall area was chosen as the site for Dominica's main airport in 1944, for it was the only place on the island with extensive flat land. It was only after the completion of the Cross-Country Roadway connection from Belles to Marigot, in 1958, that work on the airport began. Sunrise Airways S.A. is a Haitian airline that provides scheduled passenger and charter flights. History Sunrise Airways was founded in 2010 and commenced flights on a charter basis on January 1, 2011. In February 2011, the carrier began scheduled flights between Port-au-Prince and Jacmel in Haiti offering passenger, cargo and mail services. In July 2011, all scheduled flights stopped and the airline operated only on a charter basis. Princess Juliana International Airport
Princess Juliana International Airport is the main airport on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin. The airport is located on the Dutch side of the island, in the country of Sint Maarten, close to the shore of Simpson Bay Lagoon. In 2015, the airport handled 1,829,543 passengers and around 60,000 aircraft movements. The airport serves as a hub for Winair and is the major gateway for the smaller Leeward Islands, including Anguilla, Saba, Saint Barthélemy and Sint Eustatius. It is named after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, who landed there while she was heir presumptive in 1944, the year after the airport opened.
