La Gloria Cubana (cigar Brand)
La Gloria Cubana is the name of two premium cigar brands, one produced on the island of Cuba for Habanos SA, the Cuban state-owned tobacco company, and the other produced in the Dominican Republic by El Credito Cigar Company for General Cigar Company, now a subsidiary of Swedish Match. La Gloria Cubana was sold to General Cigar Company by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo in 1999 for an undisclosed sales price. History The La Gloria Cubana brand was created in 1885 by the Sociedad Cabañas y Castro, then bought twenty years later in 1905 by José F. Rocha, who manufactured the brand from his factory at 364 Miguel Street in Havana. After Rocha died in 1954, the Cifuentes family bought both La Gloria Cubana and Bolivar from Rocha's former company. Production was moved to the Partagás Factory, where it's still produced today, and became very popular as an export brand. A cigar is a rolled bundle of dried and fermented tobacco leaves made to be smoked. Cigars are produced in a variety of sizes and shapes. Habanos S.A. is a Cuban manufacturing company of tobacco that controls the promotion, distribution, and export of premium cigars and other tobacco products for Cuba worldwide. It was established in 1994. Ownership of Habanos S.A. is split equally between state-owned Cubatabaco and privately held Spanish-based tobacco giant Altadis. The company commercialises the brands Cohiba, Montecristo, and Romeo y Julieta, among others. Ernesto Perez-Carrillo
Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr. (born 1952), is a Cuban American cigar maker who resides in Coral Gables, Florida, and the Dominican Republic. Career Perez-Carrillo, is behind the cigar brand La Gloria Cubana. As a young adult, Perez-Carrillo's passion was for jazz. He worked to become a jazz drummer and, at the age of 25, moved to New York City to pursue a career as a musician. After exhausting his efforts to catch on with Stan Getz and his band, he returned to Miami, and began to work on cigars. He took over El Credito, his father's cigar company, and set out to create a better cigar. The La Gloria Cubana was popular in the cigar craze of the early 1990s and, in 1999, Swedish Match purchased El Credito from the Perez-Carrillo family. A cigarillo (from Spanish ''cigarrillo'', meaning "cigarette", in turn from ''cigarro'' ("cigar") + ''-illo'' (diminutive suffix), pronounced in parts of Latin America or in Spain) is a short, narrow cigar.
