La Florida (film)
''La Florida'' is a Quebec comedy film, released in 1993.Gerald Pratley, ''A Century of Canadian Cinema''. Lynx Images, 2003. . p. 79. The film was directed by George Mihalka, and written by Suzette Couture and Pierre Sarrazin. Synopsis The film stars Rémy Girard and Pauline Lapointe as Léo and Ginette Lespérance, a married couple who, after facing one too many Montreal winters, move their family to Fort Lauderdale, where they buy a motel catering to "snowbirds". However, their new business runs afoul of "Big Daddy" (Raymond Bouchard), an established motel operator and local crime boss, who makes it his mission to drive the Lespérances out of business. The Lespérances may, however, have an ally in Jay Lamori (Jason Blicker), a local businessman of uncertain motives who may or may not be what he seems. George Mihalka
George Mihalka (born 1953) is a Hungarian-born Canadian filmmaker. He is known for his 1981 slasher film '' My Bloody Valentine'' which was remade in 2009. Career In Canada since 1963, George Mihalka studied film at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. In 1981, he directed '' My Bloody Valentine'', a low-budget ‘slasher’ for Paramount that was a modest box office hit. He has since directed in Quebec, Europe and the U.S., moving with ease from French to English, comedy to drama, theatrical features to episodic television. His 1993 satirical feature, ''La Florida'', about Quebec snowbirds, was a huge hit in that province and the Golden Reel Award winner for the highest-grossing Canadian film of the year. Genie Award
The Genie Awards were given out annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to recognize the best of Canadian cinema from 1980–2012. They succeeded the Canadian Film Awards (1949–1978; also known as the "Etrog Awards," for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed the statuette). Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the ''Genie Rules and Regulations'' booklet which is distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, meet to screen the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then vote on these nominations. Snowbird (people)
A snowbird is a person who migrates from the colder northern parts of North America to warmer southern locales, typically during the winter. The southern locales include the Sun Belt and Hawaii in the United States, as well as Mexico and the Caribbean. Snowbirds used to primarily be retired or older, but are increasingly of all ages. Conversely, a sunbird is one who leaves warmer locales in the summer, migrating to cooler locales such as higher elevations or more northerly regions. Profile Snowbirds are typically retirees who wish to avoid the snow and cold temperatures of northern winter, but maintain ties with family and friends by staying there the rest of the year. In recent years, younger people with jobs tied to seasonal tourists often migrate southward, following the tourist season, to southern resorts.
