La Crosse County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. At the 2020 census, the population was 120,784. Its county seat is La Crosse. La Crosse County is included in the La Crosse-Onalaska, WI-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area with a population of 139,627 and is the most populous county on Wisconsin's western border. Grandad Bluff
Grandad Bluff (also Granddad Bluff) is a bluff on the east side of La Crosse, Wisconsin. It is approximately above the surrounding land and above sea level. Bliss Road provides access to the bluff. A park shelter in a fenced-off area atop the bluff provides visitors with a view of La Crosse. It contains a panoramic photo of La Crosse taken in 2004, with annotations of La Crosse landmarks. Locations visible from the bluff include the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, the Mississippi River, bluffs in Minnesota, and Interstate 90. Geology The landscape has a geomorphically young appearance because of its Pleistocene history. The Mississippi River probably did not occupy this course before the Pleistocene. State Trunk Highway 35 (STH-35, WIS 35) is a Wisconsin state highway running north–south across western Wisconsin. It is 412.15 miles in length, and is the longest state highway in Wisconsin. Portions of WIS 35 are part of the Great River Road. Route description WIS 35 is a major north–south route through westernmost Wisconsin, often following close to the state border. Its county seat is Whitehall, Wisconsin, Whitehall. Many people of Hispanic, Polish, Norwegian and German descent live in this area. History Patches of woodland are all that remain of the brush and light forest that once covered the county. In ancient times, the woodlands contained a great deal of timber, but Native Americans in the United States, Native Americans burned them periodically to encourage the growth of berries. La Crosse Regional Airport is a public airport located northwest of La Crosse, a city in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. Until August 2013 the airport was called La Crosse Municipal Airport. It occupies the northern area of French Island, next to the Mississippi River. La Crosse's airport is the closest scheduled airline airport to the U.S. Army Fort McCoy base near Sparta, Wisconsin. Scenic Mississippi Regional Transit or SMRT is a commuter bus system serving the Driftless Area of Wisconsin. It provides four routes which serve Crawford County, La Crosse County, Monroe County and Vernon County. It was recognized by Wisconsin Rural Partners as one of Wisconsin’s Top Rural Development Initiatives in 2017. Services The transit system operates four routes. Each route runs 3 times per day, except the yellow route, which operates 4 times per day. La Crosse MTU
The La Crosse Municipal Transit Utility or MTU is the primary provider of mass transportation in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Using 21 buses, eleven regular routes are provided from Monday through Friday. On Saturdays, the MTU runs six routes, and five routes on Sundays. History Public transit in La Crosse began with the opening of a horse-drawn streetcar line in 1879. Over time, more streetcar lines were added and in 1893, all streetcars had been electrified. Beginning in the early 20th century however, increasing car ownership led to a decline of the privately run streetcar system. As a result, buses began to replace streetcars throughout the city and by November 1945, the last streetcar line closed. The City of La Crosse took over operations of the buses in 1975 from the Mississippi Valley Public Service Company, as the buses could no longer be operated profitably. La Crosse station is an Amtrak intercity train station in La Crosse, Wisconsin, served the daily ''Empire Builder''. The station was built in 1926–27 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road), replacing an older station that burned in 1916. The station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Depot and was renovated in 2001. State Trunk Highway 162 (often called Highway 162, STH-162 or WIS 162) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It runs in north–south in southwest Wisconsin from Stoddard to Four Corners. Route description The highway starts at its intersection with Highway 33 and Division Street in Stoddard and runs east along Coon Creek. After a concurrency with County Highway K, the highway goes through Chaseburg and continues northeast. The highway runs along a short concurrency with US 14 and US 61. This short concurrency is a wrong-way concurrency because WIS 162 and US 61 are signed in opposing directions throughout its length.
