The LXXIV Army Corps (german: LXXIV. Armeekorps) was an army corps of the German Wehrmacht during World War II. History The LXXIV Army Corps was formed on 26 July 1943 as a static army corps under the authority of ''Oberbefehlshaber West'' (Army Group D) in Hanover in Wehrkreis XI. It was subordinate to the 7th Army from July 1943 to June 1944 and subsequently joined, at times, the 5th Panzer Army and the 15th Army. The initial commander of the LXXIV Army Corps was Erich Straube. On 16 December 1944, Straube was succeeded as corps commander by Carl Püchler. The LXXIV Army Corps was trapped in the Ruhr Pocket at the end of the war. Corps (; plural ''corps'' ; from French , from the Latin "body") is a term used for several different kinds of organization. A military innovation by Napoleon I, the formation was first named as such in 1805. 77th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)
The 77th Infantry Division (''77. Infanteriedivision'' in German) was a German military unit which served during World War II. Operational history The infantry division was formed on 15 January 1944 in the town of Münsingen, and formed part of the twenty-fifth wave of infantry divisions raised in Germany. The division was built up around a cadre of officers and men from the 355th and 364th Infantry Divisions, which both had been badly mauled on the Eastern Front. The new recruits joining the division were well trained, and benefited from the experience of the officers and men they were joining. The division was sent to Normandy in France as a component of the LXXXIV Corps of the 7th Army, which was tasked with defending occupied France from an Allied invasion west of the Seine. The 116th ''Panzer'' Division, also known as the "Windhund (Greyhound) Division", was a German armoured formation that saw combat during World War II. History Formation The 116th Division was constituted in the Rhineland and Westphalia areas of western Germany in March 1944 from the remnants of the 16th ''Panzergrenadier Division'', and the 179th Reserve ''Panzer Division''. The 16th had suffered heavy casualties in combat on the Eastern Front near Stalingrad, and the 179th was a second-line formation that had been on occupation duty in France since 1943. Western Front In 1944, it participated in opposing the Normandy landings, the Battle of Normandy, and was later trapped in the Falaise Pocket following Operation Cobra. The 89th Infantry Division (german: 89. Infanterie-Division) was an infantry division of the German Heer during World War II. Operational history The 89th Infantry Division was raised as part of the 25th deployment wave.Other divisions of the 25th wave: 77th, 84th, 85th, 91st and 92nd Infantry Divisions. It was first assembled at Truppenübungsplatz Bergen near Celle on 15 January 1944. Like the other divisions of the 25th wave, the 89th Infantry Division originally contained only two (instead of the standard three) infantry regiments. The initial regiments of the 89th Infantry Divisions were Grenader Regiments 1055 and 1056. The Eifel (; lb, Äifel, ) is a low mountain range in western Germany and eastern Belgium. 3rd Parachute Division (Germany)
The 3rd Parachute Division was an elite military unit of Nazi Germany's ''Luftwaffe'' that was active during World War II. Its formation began in October 1943 in France near Reims. From February 1944 near Brest. In March 1944 division was reinforced by soldiers from the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Parachute Regiment. Operational history The 3rd Parachute Division was an airborne division which fought during World War II. It was formed during 1943–44 around a cadre consisting of the veteran 3rd Battalion, 1st Parachute Regiment. The Division was well equipped with 930 MG42s. Each company had 20 MG 42s and 43 sub machine guns while a squad had 2 MG42s and 5 sub machine guns. It arrived in Normandy on 10 June, by truck after a night drive from Brittany. The 344th Infantry Division, (German: ''344. Infanterie-Division'') was an infantry division of the German Army during World War II, active from 1942 to 1945 in two separate instances. History The 344th Infantry Division was formed on 25 September 1942 in France from personnel from Wehrkreis V. After her training, she was sent in November 1942 to the Bordeaux sector within LXXX. Armeekorps of the 1st Army in Heeresgruppe D. One of its regiments was the Indian Infanterie-Regiment 950.
