Stammheim (german: Köln-Stammheim) is a municipal part of Cologne, Germany and part of the district of Mülheim. Stammheim lies on the right bank of the river Rhine, between Mülheim (proper) and Flittard. The city part has 7.473 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2008) and covers an area of 3,75 km². Stammheim was first mentioned in 959; the former Stammheim palace ''(Schloss Stammheim)'' was purchased by the Fürstenberg family in 1818, but heavily damaged during the Bombing of Cologne in World War II and later worked away completely. Mülheim ( ; ) is a borough ('' Stadtbezirk'') of Cologne in Germany and a formerly independent town (''Mülheim am Rhein''). Mülheim is located on the right bank of the Rhine opposite the old town of Cologne. The district borders Leverkusen to the north, Bergisch Gladbach to the east, the Cologne districts of Kalk and Innenstadt to the south. The river Rhine lies west of Mülheim, on the other riverbank lies the Cologne borough of Nippes. The district is ethnically diverse, with a significant Turkish population. The House of Fürstenberg is the name of a German noble family of Westphalia, which descended from Hermannus de Vorstenberg. He was a liegeman of the Archbishop of Cologne, who was among the prince electors of the Holy Roman Empire. Hermannus held a castle for his lord called Fürstenberg ("Prince's Hill") at Ense-Höingen in Soest; this castle would give the family its name. His son was Wilhelm von Vorstenberg, the Justiciar and Castellan of Werl. History Already Imperial Knights, the family members were created Imperial Barons ('' Reichsfreiherren'') on 26 April 1660.
