Kwon Yeo-sun (born 1965) is a South Korean writer. Life Kwon Yeo-sun was born in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province of South Korea in 1965. Kwon enjoyed a brilliant literary debut in 1996 when her novel ''Niche of Green'' was awarded the Sangsang Literary Award. Andong
Andong () is a city in South Korea, and the capital of North Gyeongsang Province. It is the largest city in the northern part of the province with a population of 167,821 as of October 2010. The Nakdong River flows through the city. Andong is a market centre for the surrounding agricultural areas. Since the 1970s Andong has developed rapidly, although the population has fallen by nearly seventy thousand as people have moved away to Seoul, Busan, Daegu and other urban centres. In the late 1990s and early 2000s it became a tourism and cultural center. Andong is known as a centre of culture and folk traditions. The surrounding area maintains many types of traditions and the Andong Folk Festival is held in mid October every year. North Gyeongsang
North Gyeongsang Province ( ko, 경상북도, translit=Gyeongsangbuk-do, ) is a province in eastern South Korea. The province was formed in 1896 from the northern half of the former Gyeongsang province, and remained a province of Korea until the country's division in 1945, then became part of South Korea. Daegu was the capital of North Gyeongsang Province between 1896 and 1981, but has not been a part of the province since 1981. In 2016, the provincial capital moved from Daegu to Andong. The area of the province is , 19.1 percent of the total area of South Korea. June Democracy Movement
The June Democratic Struggle (), also known as the June Democracy Movement and June Democratic Uprising, was a nationwide pro-democracy movement in South Korea that generated mass protests from June 10 to June 29, 1987. The demonstrations forced the ruling government to hold elections and institute other democratic reforms, which led to the establishment of the Sixth Republic, the present-day government of South Korea. On June 10, the military regime of President Chun Doo-hwan announced its choice of Roh Tae-woo as the next president. The public designation of Chun's successor was seen as a final affront to a delayed and deferred process to revise the South Korean constitution to permit direct election of the President. ''Lemon'' ( ko, 레몬) is 2019 a South Korean novella by Kwon Yeo-sun. Development In 2016 Kwon published a short story called "You Do Not Know." She later expanded it and published it as ''Lemon'', which was published in its home country in 2019. is the South Korean publisher. It was published in English in 2021, with Janet Hong being the translator. Content It has eight sections, with perspective being switched between characters, with different characters having different viewpoints of the same events. ''Publishers Weekly'' stated that each section reads like a short story. Plot The plot concerns a murder in 2002, during the summer, of 18-year old Kim Hae-on, a student in high school whose body is found in Seoul. Janet Hong ( Korean: 홍지명) is a writer and translator of Korean literature based in Vancouver, Canada. She has translated numerous works of fiction, essays, and graphic novels such as Keum Suk Gendry-Kim's ''Grass.'' Her translation of the graphic novel ''Moms'' by Yeong-shin Ma is set to be adapted for television by Playground Entertainment. Life and work While studying English literature at the University of British Columbia, Hong began translating with the short story, ''The Woman Next Door'' by Ha Seong-nan. At the encouragement of a Korean language professor, she submitted the translation for the 2001 Korea Times Modern Korean Literature Translation Awards and won the grand prize.
