Konstantinos Kosmopoulos
Konstantinos Kosmopoulos ( el, Κωνσταντίνος Κοσμόπουλος; 1928 – February 12, 2011) was a Greek politician who served as the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city, from 1989 to 1998. He was succeeded in office by Vasilis Papageorgopoulos. Kosmopoulos died on February 12 2011, of a cardiac arrest at the age of 83. ''Eleftherotypia'' ( el, Ελευθεροτυπία, lit=freedom of the press) was a daily national newspaper published in Athens, Greece. Published since 21 July 1975, it was the first newspaper to appear after the fall of the Regime of the Colonels, and for most of its period had been one of the two most widely circulated newspapers in the country. Generally taking a center-left, socialist stance, it was highly respected for its independence and impartiality. Vasilis Papageorgopoulos ( el, Βασίλης Παπαγεωργόπουλος; born 27 June 1947) is a retired Greek sprinter, former mayor of Thessaloniki and convicted felon. He won two medals at the European Indoor Championships as well as the bronze medal in the 100 metres at the 1971 European Championships in Athletics. He was named the 1971 Greek Athlete of the Year. Biography Papageorgopoulos' personal best in 100 metres was 10.22 seconds, achieved in August 1972 in Izmir. Cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. It is a medical emergency that, without immediate medical intervention, will result in sudden cardiac death within minutes. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and possibly defibrillation are needed until further treatment can be provided.
