Kleanthis Maropoulos
Kleanthis Maropoulos ( el, Κλεάνθης Μαρόπουλος; 1919 – 3 January 1991) was a Greek footballer who played as a striker for AEK Athens He was a star footballer during the 1930's and 1940's and arguably the greatest Greek player of his generation. He was affectionately known as the ''"Blonde Eagle of AEK"'' ''( el, "Ξανθός Αετός της ΑΕΚ")''. Club career Early years Born in 1919 to Greek parents in Tuzla, near Constantinople, Maropoulos came to Greece with his family at the age of 3, during the population exchanges, after the Greco-Turkish War in 1922. Having settled in Kalamata, at the age of 12 he joined the local football club Prasina Poulia. When his parents moved to Kalogreza in the Athens area, he signed for Ethnikos Kalogreza. Kostas Negrepontis
Kostas Negrepontis ( el, Κώστας Νεγρεπόντης; 31 October 1897 – 19 February 1973) was a Greek footballer who played as a center forward in the 1920's and 1930's and a later manager. He was considered a great virtuoso of the ball, a football intelligence and a great shooter. He was a figure and was so dear to his fellows that never left their memory. Those who lived near him, those who worked with him, spoke with admiration about "Negro", as the fans called him. Calm, likeable and always optimistic, Negrepontis was the idol of fans and opponents. 1939–40 Panhellenic Championship
The 1939–40 Panhellenic Championship was the 11th season of the highest football league of Greece and the last before the WW2 took place. It was carried out with a system similar to that of the previous season in which 14 teams participated again, 8 from the Cental and 6 from Northern Greece, which were divided into groups. As in the previous year, in order to complete the championship, since it took a total of 30 matchdays, the teams that qualified for the national championship did not compete with each other again but transferred the mutual results of the local championships. The Mediterranean Cup was an association football competition contested by men's national teams and national B teams of the states bordering the Mediterranean Sea. There have been three tournaments for the Mediterranean Cup: the first one was officially called Eastern Mediterranean Friendship Cup, the second was called Eastern Mediterranean Cup and the last one was just "Mediterranean Cup". Italy, Egypt, Greece and Turkey were the four participants of the first two editions (Italy played with the national B team).
