King's School Of Oratory
The King's School of Oratory, or the Byron W. King School of Oratory, was a school for speech arts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that operated from 1888 to at least 1948. The school taught elocution and speech arts including public speaking, dramatics, voice production (singing and speaking), physical culture, Shakespeare, and cure of speech defects (i.e. speech therapy). The school conferred degrees as well as operating short courses. Speech therapy was open to various ages. History The school was founded by Dr. Byron Wesley King, who had overcome a stammer in his own youth to become a renowned orator. King taught speech and drama at Curry College before opening his own school. King died unexpectedly in 1924 during his return from a speaking engagement. Zeola Hershey Misener
Mary Zeola Hershey Misener (October 22, 1878 – October 30, 1966) was an Indiana suffragist and politician. She was the first woman elected to state legislature from her district and one of the first in the state. Early life Mary Zeola Hershey was born October 22, 1878 in West Salem, Ohio to John and Carrie Stephenson Hershey. She attended the United Brethren College in Westerville, Ohio and King's School of Oratory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Political career Hershey Misener was a feminist and suffragist who helped organize Indiana's League of Women Voters and for several years served as vice-president. She spoke at the League's 1926 regional convention. She was elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 1928, the first woman to be elected from her district and one of the first in the state. Venzella Jones
Venzella Newsome Jones (1893–1973) was a black actress, orator, playwright, drama teacher, and theatre director. Education and career Jones was born in Ohio. She attended King's School of Oratory in Pittsburgh, becoming its first black graduate. Later she taught drama at Rust College, Mississippi and at Morgan State College in Baltimore. She organised the Imperial Art Players in Pittsburgh in 1924 and later formed the eponymous Venzella Jones Repertory Group.
