Ken Reid (comics Artist)
Ken Reid (1919–1987) was a British comic artist and writer, best known as the co-creator of ''Roger the Dodger'' and ''Jonah (comics), Jonah'' for ''The Beano'' and Faceache for ''Jet (comic), Jet'' (later appeared in ''Buster (comic), Buster''). Biography Born in Manchester, Reid drew from an early age. Robert Nixon (comics)
Robert Nixon (7 July 1939 – 22 October 2002) was an artist who worked on several British comics. Biography Early life and education Nixon was born in South Bank, Middlesbrough, in North Yorkshire on 7 July 1939. He was the fifth of six children born to Arthur Nixon and Phylis Thompson. Robert's mother Phylis worked as a housewife while his father worked locally as a steelworker. As a child, Nixon spent much of his time drawing and sketching, and his artistic skills were recognised when he was seven years old by teachers at Cromwell Road School which he attended in South Bank. During his early years as an artist, and supported by teachers at the Central Secondary Modern School (Victoria Street, Southbank), Nixon won several art competitions and a scholarship to Middlesbrough Art College in 1955 when he was sixteen. Shiver And Shake
''Shiver and Shake'' was a British comic magazine published every Monday by IPC Magazines Ltd. It ran from (issue dates) 10 March 1973 to 5 October 1974, when it merged with ''Whoopee!'' As often happens with British comics, many names of strips were a play on popular television programmes and films of the time. The theme of the strips were mainly horror (albeit of a comic nature); similar to the later ''Monster Fun''; indeed, ''Frankie Stein'' appeared in both comics. In an idea borrowed from the successful ''Whizzer and Chips'', it was two comics in one; ''Shake'' being a pull-out section from ''Shiver''. The main star of ''Shiver'' was a ghost of the same name, while the eponymous '' Shake'' was an elephant. Both had their own strips in their respective sections ('' The Duke's Spook'' and ''Shake''). David Britton
David Britton (18 February 1945 – 29 December 2020) was a British author, artist, and publisher. In the 1970s he founded ''Weird Fantasy'' and ''Crucified Toad'', a series of small press magazines of the speculative fiction and horror genres. In 1976, Britton and Michael Butterworth co-founded the publishing house Savoy Books. Biography Britton was a student at St John's College, Durham, graduating in 1969 with a degree in Education. In 1976, Britton founded the publisher and distributor Savoy Books with Michael Butterworth, who he had met in the early seventies. At the time, Britton was running the bookshop The House on the Borderland in Manchester. ''Pow!'' was a weekly British comic book published by Odhams Press' Power Comics imprint in 1967 and 1968. Like other Power Comics, ''Pow!'' featured a mixture of British strips with reprints from American Marvel Comics, including Spider-Man, Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD and the Fantastic Four. It is unrelated to ''POW! Entertainment'', an American media production company. Publication history The Power Comics imprint was led by a three-man editorial team, known as Alf, Bart, and Cos. Alfred Wallace ("Alf") was the Managing Editor at Odhams, and supervised the entire Power Comics line. Under his direction, Bart and Cos were the staff editors who handled the individual titles. Oliver Norvell Hardy (born Norvell Hardy; January 18, 1892 – August 7, 1957) was an American comic actor and one half of Laurel and Hardy, the double act that began in the era of silent films and lasted from 1926 to 1957. Stan Laurel (born Arthur Stanley Jefferson; 16 June 1890 – 23 February 1965) was an English comic actor, writer, and film director who was one half of the comedy double act, duo Laurel and Hardy. Frankenstein's Monster
Frankenstein's monster or Frankenstein's creature, often referred to as simply "Frankenstein", is a fictional character who first appeared in Mary Shelley's 1818 novel ''Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus''. Shelley's title thus compares the monster's creator, Victor Frankenstein, to the mythological character Prometheus, who fashioned humans out of clay and gave them fire. In Shelley's Gothic story, Victor Frankenstein builds the creature in his laboratory through an ambiguous method based on a scientific principle he discovered. ''Monster High'', a fashion doll and media franchise created by Garrett Sander and released by American toy company Mattel on 11 June 2010, features a variety of fictional characters, many of whom are students at the titular high school. ''Smash!'' was a weekly British comics, British comic book, published initially by Odhams Press and subsequently by IPC Magazines, from 5 February 1966 to 3 April 1971. After 257 issues it merged into ''Valiant (comics), Valiant''. During 1967 and 1968 ''Smash!'' was part of Odhams' Power Comics line, notable for its publication of American superhero strips. During this period, alongside British humour strips, ''Smash!'' included black-and-white superhero reprints originally published in the US by Marvel Comics and DC Comics.
