Robert Nixon (comics)
Robert Nixon (7 July 1939 – 22 October 2002) was an artist who worked on several British comics. Biography Early life and education Nixon was born in South Bank, Middlesbrough, in North Yorkshire on 7 July 1939. He was the fifth of six children born to Arthur Nixon and Phylis Thompson. Robert's mother Phylis worked as a housewife while his father worked locally as a steelworker. As a child, Nixon spent much of his time drawing and sketching, and his artistic skills were recognised when he was seven years old by teachers at Cromwell Road School which he attended in South Bank. During his early years as an artist, and supported by teachers at the Central Secondary Modern School (Victoria Street, Southbank), Nixon won several art competitions and a scholarship to Middlesbrough Art College in 1955 when he was sixteen. South Bank, Middlesbrough
South Bank is a township in the Redcar and Cleveland borough in North Yorkshire, England on the south bank of the River Tees. It is east of Middlesbrough and south-west of Redcar. The town is served by railway station. The namesake ward had a population of 6,548 at the 2011 census. It forms part of the Teesside built-up area's Middlesbrough subdivision in 2011. The area is part of Greater Eston; which also includes Eston, Grangetown, Normanby, Teesville and part of Ormesby. Ormesby's ancient parish was split into civil parishes. The area was in Normanby civil parish. In 1894, the area gained a higher population with South Bank in Normanby Urban District Council created. The Dandy
''The Dandy'' was a British children's comic magazine published by the Dundee based publisher DC Thomson. The first issue was printed in December 1937, making it the world's third-longest running comic, after ''Il Giornalino'' (cover dated 1 October 1924) and ''Detective Comics'' (cover dated March 1937). From August 2007 until October 2010, it was rebranded as ''Dandy Xtreme''. One of the best selling comics in the UK, along with ''The Beano'', ''The Dandy'' reached sales of two million a week in the 1950s. The final printed edition was issued on 4 December 2012, the comic's 75th anniversary, after sales slumped to 8,000 a week. On the same day, ''The Dandy'' relaunched as an online comic, The Digital Dandy, appearing on the Dandy website and in the Dandy App. The digital relaunch was not successful and the comic ended just six months later. Korky The Cat
''Korky the Cat'' is a character in a comic strip in the British comics magazine The Dandy. It first appeared in issue 1, dated 4 December 1937, except for one issue, No. 294 (9 June 1945) when Keyhole Kate was on the cover. For several decades he was the mascot of The Dandy. In 1984, after 47 virtually continuous years, Korky was replaced on the front cover by Desperate Dan. History The strip's simple premise follows the adventures of a black male cat called Korky, a cat who behaves like a human and is accepted in a world of humans as only a comic character can be. Originally a mute character, he started speaking in No. 149, 5 October 1940 (see image for his first words as he tries to help some hungry dogs). ''The Topper'' was a UK comic published by D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd that ran from 7 February 1953 to 15 September 1990, when it merged with ''The Beezer''. A strip named "Mickey the Monkey" originally appeared on the front cover. In 1973, it was replaced by "Send for Kelly", by " Danny's Tranny" in 1975, briefly by "The Whizzers from Oz" in 1979, and again in 1979 by " Tricky Dicky". "Beryl the Peril" took over on 24 May 1986, and remained there until the merger with ''The Beezer''. Unlike most other comics at the time, which were half tabloid size, the Topper was for many years full tabloid. It changed to A4 in 1980, one year before ''The Beezer''. Two comics were merged into ''The Topper'' during its run: these were '' Buzz'' in 1975 and '' Sparky'' in issue 1276 (16 July 1977). Beryl the Peril (or simply Beryl) is a fictional character created by David Law, the creator of Dennis the Menace, for issue 1 of '' The Topper'' comic a Media (communication), medium used to express ideas with images, often combined with text or other visual information. Trevor Metcalfe (born May 1939 in Brotton, Yorkshire) is a British illustrator and comic book artist. Known for his comic strips in IPC Magazines comics such as Sweet Tooth and Junior Rotter in ''Whizzer and Chips''. Influences include Leo Baxendale, Reg Parlett and Walt Disney. Biography Metcalfe became interested in drawing at age eight during a stay in hospital. His main influence being sports cartoonist Tom Webster. He first submitted work to his local newspaper alongside art school mate Robert Nixon. After his National Service he obtained work for DC Thomson drawing his own strip Babes and Bullies for ''The Dandy Annual''. Ivy the Terrible is a fictional character featured in ''The Beano''. She is a four-year-old girl who annoys her parents with her misbehaviour. She first appeared in ''The Beano'' in 1985 in the comic strip of the same name, but has starred in other comic strips throughout ''Beano'' history. ''Krazy'' was a British comic book magazine published every Monday by IPC Magazines Ltd. It ran from (issues dates) 16 October 1976 to 15 April 1978, when it merged with stable-mate ''Whizzer and Chips''. In 1977, one of the characters in the comic, Cheeky, proved popular enough to get his own comic, '' Cheeky'', which was later merged into ''Whoopee!''. The comic included a "disguise" back-cover, such as the cover of a diary or brochure, which allowed readers to hide the comic from parents or teachers (although one issue on April Fool's day had the front cover upside down). The 12½p Buytonic Boy
''The 12½p Buytonic Boy'' was a British comic strip, created by Robert Nixon, although Brian Walker frequently deputised when Bob was on leave. It debuted as "Half a Dollar Boy" in issue 37 of Monster Fun comic, before becoming a regular feature in the first issue of the magazine '' Krazy'', dated 16 October 1976. Concept The strip was about a boy called Steve Ford, who, after buying a special tonic from Professor Nutz for 12½ pence, gained special powers. He would later be hired by the Everso Secret Service (pronounced ''ever-so-secret service''), using his powers to interfere with the plans of the villainous spies from rival organisation the "NME" (pronounced ''enemy''). This being the period of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, the names of the agents of the NME included Boris and Ivan, and they would occasionally dress as Russians. Gums (comics)
The gums or gingiva (: gingivae) consist of the mucosal tissue that lies over the mandible and maxilla inside the mouth. Gum health and disease can have an effect on general health. Structure The gums are part of the soft tissue lining of the mouth. They surround the teeth and provide a seal around them. Unlike the soft tissue linings of the lips and cheeks, most of the gums are tightly bound to the underlying bone which helps resist the friction of food passing over them. Thus when healthy, it presents an effective barrier to the barrage of periodontal insults to deeper tissue. Healthy gums are usually coral pink in light skinned people, and may be naturally darker with melanin pigmentation. Changes in color, particularly increased redness, together with swelling and an increased tendency to bleed, suggest an inflammation that is possibly due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque.
