Karolina Styczyńska
Karolina Fortin ( (), Japanese: カロリーナ・ステチェンスカ; born June 17, 1991) is a retired Polish women's professional shogi player who achieved the rank of 1-dan. She is the first non-Japanese to be awarded professional status by the Japan Shogi Association. Shogi Amateur Styczyńska started playing shogi as a teenager after seeing the game depicted in an issue of the Japanese manga ''Naruto''. She learned the rules of the game on the Internet, then began studying on her own using online materials and videos. She began playing online games at a website called ''81Dojo'', where her strong play was eventually noticed by women's professional Madoka Kitao. Kitao was impressed by Styczyńska's ability and invited her to come to Japan for a two-week trip to study shogi in 2011. The Dial-up Wide-Area Network Game Operation, better known by the acronym DWANGO, was an early online gaming service based in the United States. Launched in 1994, it was originally known for its compatibility with ''Doom'', for which it functioned as a matchmaking service for online multiplayer. Akira Watanabe (shogi Player)
is a Japanese professional shogi player ranked 9-dan. He is the current holder of the Meijin, and Kiō major titles, and also a former holder of the Kisei, Ōshō, Ōza and Ryūō titles. He is also a Lifetime Kiō and a Lifetime Ryūō title holder. Early life Watanabe was born on April 23, 1984, in Katsushika, Tokyo. He learned how to play shogi from his father, who was an amateur 5-dan ranked player. He won the in 1994 as a fourth-grade student at Hokizuka Elementary School. He was the first fourth-grade winner in the history of the tournament. That same year Watanabe took the entrance exam for the Japan Shogi Association's apprentice school. 62nd NHK Cup (shogi)
The 62nd NHK Cup, or as it is officially known the was a professional shogi tournament organized by the Japan Shogi Association and sponsored by Japan's public broadcaster NHK. Play began on April 8, 2012, and ended on March 17, 2013. The 50-player single elimination tournament was won by Akira Watanabe. All of the tournament games were shown on NHK-E.
