Karlene Davis
Dame Karlene Cecile Davis, DBE (born 10 October 1946) is a former General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Midwifery, Regional Representative for Europe in the International Confederation of Midwives, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, and a member of the Wellbeing Council at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Born and raised in Jamaica, Davis emigrated to the UK in 1967 to train as a nurse and later as a midwife before going on to teach midwifery. Her goal is to see midwives acknowledged as the "lead professionals in maternity care, working together to enhance the wider public health both nationally and internationally". Davis was appointed General Secretary of The Royal College of Midwives in 1994 and served until October 2008. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) is a British midwives organisation founded in 1881 by Louisa Hubbard and Zepherina Veitch. It has existed under its present name since 1947, and is the United Kingdom's only trade union or professional organisation for midwives and those that support them. History The Society was established in 1805 as Medical and Chirurgical Society of London, meeting in two rooms in barristers’ chambers at Gray's Inn and then moving to Lincoln's Inn Fields where it stayed for 25 years.
