Kansas's 8th Senate district is one of 40 districts in the Kansas Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Cindy Holscher since 2021. Geography District 8 covers much of central Overland Park in the Johnson County suburbs of Kansas City. Kansas Senate District 8 (2010)
Kansas () is a state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita. Kansas is a landlocked state bordered by Nebraska to the north; Missouri to the east; Oklahoma to the south; and Colorado to the west. Kansas is named after the Kansas River, which in turn was named after the Kansa Native Americans who lived along its banks. The tribe's name (natively ') is often said to mean "people of the (south) wind" although this was probably not the term's original meaning. For thousands of years, what is now Kansas was home to numerous and diverse Native American tribes. Tribes in the eastern part of the state generally lived in villages along the river valleys. Tim Owens (born 1945) is a former Republican member of the Kansas Senate, representing the 8th district from 2008 to 2013. He was a representative for the 19th district in the Kansas House of Representatives from 2002 until his election as senator. From 1981 to 2005, he served as a council member for the Overland Park City Council, 3rd District. An attorney, he is married with 2 children. 2012 Kansas Elections
The Kansas 2012 general elections were held on November 6, 2012. Primary elections were held on August 7, 2012. U.S. House of Representatives 1st congressional district Republican incumbent Tim Huelskamp, who had represented the 1st district since 2011, won re-election unopposed. 2nd congressional district Republican incumbent Lynn Jenkins, who has represented the 2nd district since 2009, ran for re-election. Tobias Schlingensiepen, a pastor and police chaplain, sought and received the Democratic nomination to challenge Jenkins. Jim Denning (born August 13, 1956), is a former Republican member of the Kansas Senate, representing the 8th district from 2013 to 2021. Early life On August 13, 1956, Denning was born in Great Bend, Kansas. Denning's father was Paul Denning, an oil field worker. Denning's mother was Albertine Denning. Denning was the sixth of nine siblings. Education In 1980, Denning earned a B.A. degree in Finance from Fort Hays State University. Career In 2010, Denning began to serve the Kansas House of Representatives, having defeated incumbent Democrat Dolores Furtado and representing District 19 from 2011 to 2013. Denning was succeeded by Republican Stephanie Clayton. 2018 Kansas Gubernatorial Election
The 2018 Kansas gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2018, to elect the next Governor of Kansas. Democratic nominee Laura Kelly won the election, defeating Republican nominee Kris Kobach and independent candidate Greg Orman. Incumbent Republican Governor Sam Brownback was term-limited and could not seek reelection to a third consecutive term. On July 26, 2017, Brownback was nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom.
