Whip (politics)
A whip is an official of a political party whose task is to ensure party discipline in a legislature. This means ensuring that members of the party vote according to the party platform, rather than according to their own individual ideology or the will of their donors or constituents. Whips are the party's "enforcers". They try to ensure that their fellow political party legislators attend voting sessions and vote according to their party's official policy. Members who vote against party policy may "lose the whip", being effectively expelled from the party. The term is taken from the " whipper-in" during a hunt, who tries to prevent hounds from wandering away from a hunting pack. Derek Larkin Schmidt (born January 23, 1968) is an American lawyer and politician who has been the Kansas Attorney General since 2011. A Republican, Schmidt was first elected to office serving in the Kansas Senate, where he represented the 15th district from 2001 to 2011, and served as Agriculture Committee chairman and Senate majority leader. Schmidt became the state attorney general in 2011, after he defeated incumbent Democrat Stephen Six in the November 2010 elections and joined other Republican states' Attorney Generals in suing to block many Obama administration policies. The 2022 Kansas gubernatorial election took place on November 8, 2022, to elect the governor of Kansas, with primary elections taking place on August 2, 2022. Democratic Governor Laura Kelly ran for re-election to a second term. Both Kelly and Republican State Attorney General Derek Schmidt won their respective nominations with little opposition. Libertarian Seth Cordell and independent Dennis Pyle were also on the ballot. This was the only Democratic-held governorship up for election in 2022 in a state carried by Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, and the race was expected to be one of the most competitive gubernatorial races in the nation.
