Kaernefia
''Kaernefia'' is a genus of crustose lichens in the family Teloschistaceae. It has three species, found in Australia or South Africa. Taxonomy ''Kaernefia'' was circumscribed in 2013 by Sergey Kondratyuk, John Elix, Arne Thell, and Jae-Seoun Hur, based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the family Teloschistaceae. They assigned '' Kaernefia kaernefeltii'' as the type species of the new genus. The generic name honours their colleague, Swedish lichenologist Ingvar Kärnefelt, for "his many contributions to lichenology, in particular lichens of the Teloschistaceae and Parmeliaceae". Description Species in ''Kaernefia'' have a poorly developed, indistinct thallus comprising tiny granules or granule-like isidia. It ranges in colour from yellow, to orange to greenish orange or brownish orange. It produces lecanorine apothecia with a thick margin. ''Kaernefia kaernefeltii'' is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Teloschistaceae. It is widely distributed in Australia. Taxonomy The species was first formally described by the lichenologists Sergey Kondratyuk, John Alan Elix, and Arne Thell. The type specimen was collected at the edge of Chittering Lake in Western Australia, where it was found growing on ''Melaleuca rhaphiophylla'' and ''Eucalyptus rudis''. The species epithet honours the Swedish lichenologist Ingvar Kärnefelt. In 2013, Ulf Arup and colleagues transferred the taxon was to the newly circumscribed genus ''Kaernefia'', in which it is the type species. Teloschistaceae
The Teloschistaceae are a large family of mostly lichen-forming fungi belonging to the class Lecanoromycetes in the division Ascomycota. The family, estimated to contain over 1800 species, was extensively revised in 2013, including the creation or resurrection of 31 genera. It contains three subfamilies: Xanthorioideae, Caloplacoideae, and Teloschistoideae. A fourth subfamily, Brownlielloideae, proposed in 2015, has been shown to be part of the Teloschistoideae. Ingvar Kärnefelt
Jan Eric Ingvar Kärnefelt (born 1944) is a Swedish lichenologist. Early life and education Kärnefelt was born in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1944. His initial goal in his higher-level studies at University of Cologne in 1966–1967 was to become a dentist. He changed courses in 1968, turning instead to biology at the University of Gothenburg in 1968. Gunnar Degelius, his first teacher during undergraduate studies in botany in 1968, inspired him and others. After Degelius' retirement in 1969, Ingvar continued his studies at Lund University, where Hans Runemark held a position in systematic botany. In 1971 he met Ove Almborn, who became his supervisor. In 1979, he defended his thesis titled "The brown fruticose species of ''Cetraria''". The thesis was later awarded a prize for the best doctoral dissertation in botany at Lund University during a 5-year period by the Royal Physiographic Society in Lund. John Alan Elix
John Alan (Jack) Elix (born 1941) emeritus professor in chemistry at the Australian National University, is an organic chemist who has contributed in many fields: lichenology, lichen chemotaxonomy, plant physiology and biodiversity and natural product chemistry. He has authored 2282 species names, and 67 genera in the field of mycology. Education His first degree, B.Sc., and his Ph.D were both in organic chemistry from the University of Adelaide. This was followed by post-doctoral years at the University of Cambridge and then a D.Sc. in natural products chemistry from the Australian National University. Career Elix spent a post doctoral year in 1966 at Cambridge, returning to Australia in 1967 to a lectureship in chemistry at the ANU. Parietin
Parietin is the predominant cortical pigment of lichens in the genus '' Caloplaca'', a secondary product of the lichen ''Xanthoria parietina'', and a pigment found in the roots of Curled Dock (''Rumex crispus''). It has an orangy-yellow color and absorbs blue light. It is also known as physcion. It has also been shown to protect lichens against UV-B light, at high altitudes in Alpine regions. The UV-B light stimulates production of parietin and the parietin protects the lichens from damage. Lichens in arctic regions such as Svarlbard retain this capability though they do not encounter damaging levels of UV-B, a capability that could help protect the lichens in case of Ozone layer thinning.
