KHCM-FM
KHCM-FM (97.5 MHz) is a commercial radio station in Honolulu, Hawaii. It is owned by the Salem Media Group and airs a country music radio format. The studios and offices are in Honolulu's Kalihi district. KHCM-FM carries ''Bob Kingsley's Country Top 40'' on Saturdays. KHCM-FM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 80,000 watts. The transmitter is in the Ala Moana neighborhood atop the Ala Moana Hotel, on Atkinson Drive. History KPOI-FM went on the air in 1962 as the third FM station in the state, a companion to KPOI 1380 AM (today KLHT at 1040). In 1974, KPOI-FM became KHSS. It changed its call sign to KDUK in 1979. By 1983 the station flipped formats to active rock and returned to the KPOI call letters, in honor of the former Top 40 AM sister station. In 1993 KPOI evolved to Modern rock as "97.5 The Edge." KHNR
KHNR (690 AM) is a conservative talk radio station serving Honolulu, Hawaii. The Salem Communications outlet broadcasts with a power level of 10,000 watts. Its studios are in Honolulu's Kalihi district, and its transmitter is in the Kakaako neighborhood. History KHNR's history at 690 AM can be traced back to its early days as the original home of Top 40 KKUA during the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. They later moved their Top 40 format to KQMQ-FM and switched to adult contemporary, only to have both stations simulcast the Top 40 from 1987 until October 13, 1999, when the AM became the Hawaii affiliate for Radio Disney, picking up the call letters of former Top 40 rival KORL on April 26, 2002. KHCM (880 kHz) is a Chinese-Language AM radio station serving Honolulu, Hawaii. The Salem Media Group outlet broadcasts with a power level of 2 kW. Its studios are in Honolulu's Kalihi district, and its transmitter is in the Kakaako neighborhood. History KHCM's history can be traced back to its days on 870 kHz as KAIM, whose previous format was Religious programming. When Salem bought the station in 2000, it wanted to sign the station off the air so it can allow its sister station in Los Angeles, California, to increase its signal coverage. At the last minute they decided to reduce the station's power, shift its frequency to 880 kHz and let the station stay on the air. In 2004 Salem bought Modern Rock outlet KPOI and flipped the format to an FM News/Talk outlet, its first in Hawaii. KAIM became its simulcast after the switch was made. The Salem Media Group outlet broadcasts at 107.9 MHz with an ERP of 100 kW and is licensed to Aiea, Hawaii. Its transmitter is on Palehua Road in Kapolei and its studios and offices are in Honolulu. KKOL-FM airs the nationally syndicated "Kool Gold" classic hits format from Westwood One. History KGMZ signed on the air on August 27, 1992, as a Top 40 station, only to flip formats to smooth jazz in 1994. That would give way to its current oldies format in 1997. KGU (760 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station in Honolulu, Hawaii, known as "Hawaii Sports Radio Network". It is owned by the Salem Media Group and broadcasts a sports radio format, carrying syndicated programming from the SportsMap Radio Network and VSiN Radio. The radio studios and offices are in Honolulu's Kalihi district, and its transmitter is in the Kakaako neighborhood. AM 760 is a United States clear-channel frequency, on which WJR in Detroit, Michigan is the dominant Class A station. There are only 18 stations on 760 AM within the United States. KGU is far enough away from Detroit that it broadcasts day and night with 10,000 watts, using a non-directional antenna. Programming is also heard on 250 watt FM translator K236CR at 95.1 MHz. Modern rock is an umbrella term used to describe rock music that is found on college rock radio stations. Some radio stations use this term to distinguish themselves from classic rock, which is based in 1960s–1980s rock music. Ala Moana (meaning ''path to the sea'' in Hawaiian) is a commercial, retail, and residential district of Honolulu, Hawaii. KLHT (1040 AM) is a radio station in Honolulu, Hawaii with a Christian radio format. KLHT broadcasts with 10,000 watts. The station is owned and operated by Calvary Chapel Honolulu, its on-air branding is "K-Light 1040 AM" and its slogan is "The Pure Light of Hawaii." KLHT first signed on the air on March 18, 1957. Call Sign
In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one telegraph line linking all railroad stations, there needed to be a way to address each one when sending a telegram. In order to save time, two-letter identifiers were adopted for this purpose. This pattern continued in radiotelegraph operation; radio companies initially assigned two-letter identifiers to coastal stations and stations onboard ships at sea. Active rock is a radio format used by many commercial radio stations across the United States and Canada. Active rock stations play a balance of new hard rock songs with valued classic rock favorites, normally with an emphasis on the harder edge of mainstream rock and album-oriented rock.
