Kyle GAA
Kyle GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association hurling club in County Laois, Ireland. Located near Ballaghmore on the County Laois-County Tipperary border, the club colours are blue and white. History Kyle won its only Laois Senior Hurling Championship title in 1951. They were in the 1994 Laois Junior Hurling Championship Final. After a memorable 2006 campaign, Kyle won the Laois Junior Hurling Championship beating neighbours Camross in the final to end a long spell without a championship title. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Ballaghmore, County Laois
Ballaghmore (historically ''Bellaghmore'', from ) is a small village located on the western side of County Laois, Ireland, southwest of Portlaoise. It is situated in the civil parish of Kyle in the historic barony of Clandonagh. Amenities The village has a hurling club (Kyle GAA) and a Roman Catholic church (Saint Molua's). Saint Molua's church was built in 1812, and extensively renovated in 1978. The main industry in Ballaghmore is farming. Ballaghmore Castle The town is mainly known for Ballaghmore Castle. The Laois Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Laois GAA clubs. The Laois GAA, Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1888. Clough–Ballacolla GAA, Clough–Ballacolla (incl Ballygeehan) are the title holders (2022) defeating Camross GAA, Camross in the Final and completing the club's first three-in-a-row since doing a five-in-a-row in 1918. Camross GAA
Camross GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association Hurling and Gaelic football club in County Laois, Ireland, located near to Coolrain. History Founded in 1903, the club is the most successful hurling club in County Laois and the club colours are famously black and amber. In 1957 Camross amalgamated with Killanure their parish counterparts and with amalgamation came great success. In 1957 they won Junior Championship beating St Fintans, Colt, followed with Intermediate title in 1958. The Camross club did not win the Laois Senior Hurling Championship until 1959 but since then they have added a record 25 more senior hurling titles to their roll of honour (26 titles in total). Kieran Carey
Kieran Carey (24 April 1933 – 30 May 2007) was an Irish hurler who played as a left corner-back for the Tipperary senior team. Born in Garron Borris in Ossory, County Laois in 1933 a townsland on the outskirts of his native village of Knock in County Tipperary. Kieran Carey first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-five when he first linked up with the Tipperary senior team. He made his senior debut in the 1957–58 National League. Carey went on to play a key role for Tipperary as part of the so-called "Hell's Kitchen" full-back line, and won five All-Ireland medals, seven Munster medals and five National Hurling League medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Carey won several Railway Cup medals as a non-playing substitute.
