Kuntoro Mangkusubroto
Kuntoro Mangkusubroto was Director-General (1993–97) and Minister (1998–99) in the Indonesian Department of Mines, before being appointed to head the Aceh-Nias Body for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (BRR) following the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami of December 26, 2004. Education Kuntoro was born on March 14, 1947 in Purwokerto, Central Java. After a first degree (1972) and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), he did post-graduate work at Stanford University (Master of Civil Engineering, 1977) but returned to ITB for his doctorate (1982). Career While teaching at ITB from 1982, he began working in government from 1984, initially in the ministry of the State Secretariat. 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake And Tsunami
An earthquake and a tsunami, known as the Boxing Day Tsunami and, by the scientific community, the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, occurred at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7) on 26 December 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It was an undersea megathrust earthquake that registered a magnitude of 9.1–9.3 , reaching a Mercalli intensity up to IX in certain areas. The earthquake was caused by a rupture along the fault between the Burma Plate and the Indian Plate. A series of massive tsunami waves grew up to high once heading inland, after being created by the underwater seismic activity offshore. Communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean were devastated, and the tsunamis killed an estimated 227,898 people in 14 countries, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Purwokerto is a large but non-autonomous town on the island of Java, Indonesia. It is the capital of Banyumas Regency, Central Java province.
