Kumara Illangasinghe
Kumara Illangasinghe, (B.Sc., B.D., M.Litt) is a former Anglican Bishop of Ceylon. After his ordination in 1971, he served in parishes including Thalampitiya, Rathmeewela and Aragoda. After that, he was appointed as the chaplain of Trinity College, Kandy. Illangasinghe was the principal of the Theological College of Lanka between 1992 and 1999. In 2000 he was consecrated as the fourth Bishop of Kurunegala, following the retirement of Bishop Andrew Kumarage. He is married to Dr. Lakmini Illangasinghe. Bishop Of Kurunegala
The Diocese of Kurunegala is a diocese of the Church of Ceylon (which is part of the Anglican Communion). The See was erected in 1950 from that of the Diocese of Colombo, as one of two dioceses of the Church of England in Ceylon. On 17 December 2022, Nishantha Fernando, an archdeacon in the Diocese of Kurunegala, was elected as the new Bishop of Kurunegala. Church Of Ceylon
The Church of Ceylon ( si, ලංකා සභාව) is the Anglican Church in Sri Lanka. It is an extra-provincial jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who serves as its Metropolitan. It was established in 1845 with the appointment of the first Anglican Bishop of Colombo, James Chapman and until 1950 it consisted of a single diocese; in that year a second diocese was established at Kurunegala. Andrew Kumarage
Andrew Oliver Kumarage (16 January 1934 – 21 April 2012), ( BDiv, DipRE), was the third Bishop of Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. Andrew Kumarage was born on 16 January 1934, the eldest child in a family of five. His father, Stephen, was a teacher and his mother, Mary, a nurse, who both worked as lay ministers for the Church of Ceylon. Kumarage was identified by the then Bishop of Kurunegala, Lakdasa De Mel, as a prospective leader for the Church and an early candidate for ordination. In 1954 he went to study theology at Bishop’s College, Calcutta in India and after four years of study he received a degree of Bachelor of Divinity. In 1958 Kumarage returned to Kurunegala and was subsequently made a Deacon on 1 May that year. On 23 May 1959 he was ordained as a priest in the Diocese of Kurunagala. Gregory Shantha Kumar Francis
Gregory Shantha Kumar Francis ( B.Th., PGDip.P&CC), was an Anglican Bishop of Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. Gregory Shantha Kumar Francis was born in 1955 in the village of Polgahawela, Sri Lanka. He is an upcountry Tamil, and fluent in Sinhala, English and Tamil. Francis was appointed as deacon in 1978, receiving his Bachelor of Theology from the University of Serampore the same year. In 1980 he obtained a postgraduate diploma in pastoral and clinical counselling from Nawa Jeewana Institute of Psychology, Colombo and was ordained as a priest in the Church of Ceylon. He was the chaplain at Hillwood College, Kandy (1993–2000), Trinity College, Kandy (2001–2004). Francis also obtained a higher diploma in comprehensive drug abuse prevention and counselling from the Anti Narcotic Association of Sri Lanka. Lakshman Wickramasinghe
Lakshman Wickremasinghe (25 March 1927 – 23 October 1983) was one of the youngest bishops in the Anglican Communion and a human rights activist. Early life and education Born on 25 March 1927, he was the third son of Cyril Wickremesinghe of the Ceylon Civil Service and Esme Goonewardene. One of his brothers was the press baron, Esmond Wickramasinghe. Educated at Royal College, Colombo and S Thomas' Gurutalawa, he achieved the best First in political science from the University of Ceylon, then went to Keble College, Oxford but did not finish his Master's. He then went to theological college at Ely. Following his ordination in 1952 he worked at All Saints Church, Poplar, in the East End of London. Theological College Of Lanka
The Theological College of Lanka (TCL) is a college that was inaugurated in 1963 by the Anglican Church, the Methodist Church and the Baptist Church in Sri Lanka. Later the Presbyterian Church (Presbytery of Lanka) joined the federation, to educate the new clergy (ministers) and laity in the environment and context of Sri Lanka and their own languages, Sinhala and Tamil. Rev. Basil Jackson, a British Methodist Missionary, became the founding Principal of the college in 1963. (Prior to the foundation of TCL, Jackson served as the founding director of the Ecumenical Institute for Study and Dialogue in Colombo). Shri (; , ) is a Sanskrit term denoting resplendence, wealth and prosperity, primarily used as an honorific. The word is widely used in South and Southeast Asian languages such as Marathi, Malay (including Indonesian and Malaysian), Javanese, Balinese, Sinhala, Thai, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Nepali, Malayalam, Kannada, Sanskrit, Pali, Khmer, and also among Philippine languages.
