Kuma, Kumamoto
is a village located in Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. As of May 1, 2024 the village had an estimated population of 2,723 and a population density of 13 persons per km2. The total area is 207.58 km2. Located in the southern portion of Kumamoto Prefecture, the Kuma River flows through the center. 90% of the village is covered by forests. One of Japan's largest limestone caves, Kyūsen-dō, is located in Kuma. There are two large mountains located near Kuma village. In addition, there are several mountains measuring under 700 meters whose tributaries feed into the Kuma river. The average rain fall in Kuma Mura is roughly 2,300 millimeters. Kuma village has a variety of symbols including the Japanese cedar tree, the mountain cherry blossoms, the kingfisher, and the sweet fish. 2020 Kyushu Floods
The 2020 Kyushu floods were a series of floods in July 2020 brought on when record-breaking heavy rain hit the prefectures of Kumamoto and Kagoshima, on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, on 4 July 2020 in the middle of the East Asian rainy season. The event is officially referred to as by the Japan Meteorological Agency. As a result of flooding and landslides, 77 people were confirmed dead (includes 1 death due to cardiopulmonary arrest) and approximately seven are missing. Fourteen of the victims were residents of an old age home in Kuma, Kumamoto that was flooded. Approximately 15,335 buildings were destroyed, damaged or flooded. Hisatsu Line
The is a railway line in Kyushu, Japan, operated by the Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu). It connects Yatsushiro, Kumamoto, Yatsushiro on the Kagoshima Main Line to Hayato station, Kirishima, Kagoshima , Kirishima on the Nippo Main Line. From 1909 the line was the original rail connection from Yatsushiro to Kagoshima (and via the Kitto Line, Miyazaki) until the Yatsushiro – Kagoshima coastal route via Sendai opened in 1927. The major part of the line is in the mountainous Kirishima range. No through trains are operated on this line, rather, trains go from Yatsushiro to Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto, Hitoyoshi, from Hitoyoshi to Yoshimatsu, and from Yoshimatsu to Hayato.
