Krems an der Donau () is a town of 23,992 inhabitants in Austria, in the federal state of Lower Austria. It is the fifth-largest city of Lower Austria and is approximately west of Vienna. Krems is a city with its own statute (or '' Statutarstadt''), and therefore it is both a municipality and a district. Geography Krems is located at the confluence of the Krems and Danube Rivers at the eastern end of Wachau valley, in the southern Waldviertel. Krems in Kärnten is a municipality in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia in Austria. Geography The municipal area is located in the Krems Valley of northern Carinthia, at the border with the Austrian states of Salzburg (Lungau) and Styria (Upper Styria). It stretches down from the Lieser River, a tributary of the Drava, up to the Nock Mountains, part of the Gurktal Alps range. The village of Innerkrems is the starting point of the scenic Nockalm Road to Reichenau, in the north the Schönfeldsattel Pass leads to Thomatal (Bundschuh) in Salzburg. To the west, the Katschberg Pass road and the parallel Tauern Autobahn are significant transport routes. The Krems is a river in Waldviertel in northern Lower Austria. Its drainage basin is . There are actually two rivers: the so-called "Große Krems" (Greater Krems), denoting either the whole river system or the main tributary only, and the smaller one called "Kleine Krems" (Lesser Krems). The Krems originally flowed into the Danube by Krems an der Donau, but when the Danube was built at (part of Kirchberg am Wagram), the mouth of the river — together with that of the Kamp — was moved to Altenwörth. In the upper course both rivers flow through the rough granite landscape of the Waldviertel; important places are at the Große Krems, and Kottes-Purk at the Kleine Krems. Kremsmünster is a town in Kirchdorf an der Krems District, in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. Settled in 777, it is home to the Kremsmünster Abbey. The Abbey was founded 777 by Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria and is one of the oldest abbeys of central Europe. On a striking ice-age terrace above the town, it dominates the whole Krems valley. The monks (Order of Saint Benedict), lead a famous gymnasium which has existed since 1549, and an astronomical and geophysical observatory ("Mathematical tower"). The First Slovak Republic ceased to exist here when the exiled Slovak government capitulated to General Walton Walker leading the XX Corps of the 3rd US Army on 8 May 1945.
