Koori Radio
Koori Radio (callsign 2LND), formerly Radio Redfern, is a community radio station based in Redfern broadcasting to Sydney on a citywide licence. It is part of the Gadigal Information Service (GIS) and is the only radio station in Sydney providing full-time broadcasting to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. History Koori Radio grew out of Radio Redfern, which was established in the early 1980s. Originally it had programme time on other community station Radio Skid Row. During Australia's Bicentennial in 1988, Radio Redfern played a pivotal role in informing and educating the public about Indigenous responses to the celebration. It also acted as a communication channel for the thousands of Indigenous people from around Australia who had gathered in Sydney for protests. Marlene Cummins is a jazz blues singer, saxophonist, songwriter, artist, Aboriginal Australian activist, broadcaster, dancer, and actor. Many activists consider her to be Australia's Angela Davis. Music Cummins is considered Australia's foremost indigenous blues performer, and is influenced by Big Mama Thornton, Etta James and Ray Charles. She honed her skills at the Berklee College of Music. Her band includes Murray Cook and Rex Goh. National Indigenous Radio Service
The National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS) is a satellite program feed available in Australia to Indigenous and non-Indigenous community radio stations. NIRS provides targeted and specialist programming for and by Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander broadcasters. From its base in Brisbane NIRS provides a feed of programs and music supplied by a number of contributing stations including Koori Radio, 4AAA anBBM Subscribing stations are able to re-transmit individual programs or entire blocks of program time as needed. As NIRS is broadcast 24 hours a day, stations with limited resources who are unable to provide a full-time service can use NIRS to fill the gaps between local programming.
