Elizabeth Duncan Koontz (June 3, 1919 – January 6, 1989) was a national figure in education, civil rights and the women's movement. She was the first African-American president of the National Education Association and director of the United States Department of Labor Women's Bureau. Early life and education Elizabeth (Libby) Duncan was born on June 3, 1919, in Salisbury, North Carolina. She was the youngest of seven children, who were all able to read and write at seven years old. Her parents, Samuel E. Duncan and Lena Bell (Jordan) Duncan, wanted to make sure their children were all well-educated, despite the institutional segregation at the time. Her father was a high school principal at Dunbar High School, located in East Spencer, NC. Samuel also taught at Livingstone College, and served as the sixth president at Livingstone College. Robin Michal Koontz (born July 29, 1954) is an American author and illustrator of picture books and early readers for children as well as non-fiction for middle school readers. Her books are published in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Indonesian. Many of her titles have been reviewed in School Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and the CLCD (Children's Literature Comprehension Database). Biography Koontz was born in 1954 and grew up in Wheaton, Maryland and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She attended the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland in 1973–74. She currently lives near Noti, Oregon. Koontz served as the Regional Advisor of the Oregon chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators from 1994 to 2012. Stephe Koontz is an American politician, and the first out transgender person to win a contested election in the U.S. state of Georgia. She won a city council seat in the Metro Atlanta city of Doraville on November 7, 2017, on what the ''Washington Post'' called "a "historic night for the nation’s transgender community", in which six openly transgender people won elections in the United States. A 32-year resident and political activist in the city, she won by a narrow margin of six votes. Koontz was invited to speak at the Georgia Alliance for Social Justice and Women's March "Power to the Polls" event on January 21, 2018. William Henry Koontz (July 15, 1830 – July 4, 1911) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Life and career Koontz was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania. He completed preparatory studies, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1851 and commenced practice in Somerset. He was district attorney for Somerset County, Pennsylvania, from 1853 to 1856. He was a delegate to the 1860 Republican National Convention. He served as prothonotary and clerk of the county court from 1861 to 1868. He successfully contested as a Republican the election of Alexander H. Coffroth to the Thirty-ninth Congress. He was reelected to the Fortieth Congress.
