Kony (film)
''Koni'' ( bn, কোনি; sometimes spells as ''Koney'' or ''Kony'') is a national award-winning Bengali movie released in 1984 directed by Saroj Dey, starring Soumitra Chatterjee and Sriparna Banerjee. This film is an adaptation of a Bengali novel by the same name written by Moti Nandi. The film is about a girl living in Calcutta slums, who with the help of her coach triumphs over poverty and hardships. The film's lead Sriparna Banerjee was also a professional swimmer herself in the 1970s and at the time of casting a student of Jadavpur University. In a 2012 interview, veteran actor, Soumitra Chatterjee, called Koni one of the best films of his career. He even recalled using film's catch-phrase "Fight-Koni-fight" in hard times, as a chant to himself to lift his "aging spirits". The phrase had become popular with middle-class Bengalis at the time. Saroj Dey
Saroj Dey ( bn, সরোজ দে) (1921 – 26 November 1997) was a Bengali film director who was part of the collective ''Agragami'' which made several notable films in Bengali cinema, from 1950s to the 1970s. He is best known for directing ''Je Jekhane Dariye'' (1974), and national award-winning film '' Kony'' (1984). He made his directorial debut in 1955, his film ''Daak Harkara'' (1958) with the collective Agragami, took part in Venice Film Festival, and also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. His other notable film with the collective was ''Nisithe'' (1963), which also won a National Award. His other film include, ''Sagarika'' (1956), ''Shilpi'' (1956), ''Headmaster'' (1958), ''Kanna'' (1962), ''Sankha Bela'' (1966), ''Bilambita Lay'' (1970) and ''Swati'' (1977). Swarup Dutta
Swarup Dutta (22 June 1941 – 24 July 2019) was a Bengali actor. His son Saron Dutta is a director in Bengali film industry. Early life Dutta was born in famous Dutta family of Hatkhola, Kolkata in 1941. In 1958 he passed Matriculation from the South Point School and completed I.A. from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira. Dutta graduated in economics from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. Career During his school days Dutta came into contact with veteran actor Utpal Dutt. He also performed with Utpal Dutt on stage. First breakthrough of his career is Apanjan, a popular drama film of Tapan Sinha released in 1968. This movie won the National Film Award. He played the role of hero and versatile parts in a number of Bengali films of the late 60s and early 70s. Dutta also acted in Hindi film Uphaar with Jaya Bhaduri in 1971. Moti Nandi
Moti Nandi; 10 July 1931 – 3 January 2010) was a Bengali writer and journalist. Career Moti Nandi was from Kolkata. He graduated from the University of Calcutta and became a sports journalist and worked as a sports editor in ''Anandabazar Patrika''. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award (2008) at a ceremony to mark the grand finale of the maiden edition of the Excellence in Journalism Awards. His first short story was published in '' Desh'' weekly in 1957. His story for Pujabarshiki was in ''Parichoy'' Magazine in 1985. The character ''Kalabati'' from his novels is popular among the younger audience.
