Baikal–Amur Mainline
The Baikal–Amur Mainline (russian: Байкало-Амурская магистраль, , , ) is a broad-gauge railway line in Russia. Traversing Eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East, the -long BAM runs about 610 to 770 km (380 to 480 miles) north of and parallel to the Trans-Siberian Railway. The Soviet Union built the BAM as a strategic alternative route to the Trans–Siberian Railway, seen as vulnerable especially along the sections close to the border with China. The BAM's costs were estimated at $14 billion, and it was built with special, durable tracks since much of it ran over permafrost. Due to the severe terrain, weather, length and cost, Soviet general secretary Leonid Brezhnev described BAM in 1974 as "the construction project of the century". Sovetskaya Gavan (russian: Сове́тская Га́вань, lit. ''Soviet harbor'') is a town in Khabarovsk Krai, Russia, and a port on the Strait of Tartary which connects the Sea of Okhotsk in the north with the Sea of Japan in the south. Population: It was previously known as ''Imperatorskaya Gavan'' (until 1922). Name The name of the town is often informally abbreviated to "Sovgavan" (). History On May 23, 1853, Lt. Nikolay Konstantinovich Boshnyak of the Russian-American Company ship ''Nikolay'' discovered the bay on which Sovetskaya Gavan is located and named it Khadzhi Bay. Dzyomgi Airport (russian: Аэропорт Дзёмги) is an air base in Khabarovsk Krai, Russia located northeast of Komsomolsk-na-Amure. Dzyomgi is Komsomolsk-na-Amure's northeast side airport, handling small airliner traffic. The base is home to the 23rd Fighter Aviation Regiment which flies the Sukhoi Su-30M2/SM and the Sukhoi Su-35S under the 303rd Composite Aviation Division. The airport is also the site of a major Sukhoi plant (GAZ 126), built in 1934, where the Sukhoi Su-7 and later models have been built. In September 2007 Sukhoi unveiled a passenger jet, the Superjet 100, at the airport, as well in January 2010 the new fifth generation stealth fighter jet the Sukhoi PAK FA (T-50). The airfield has been reported as the factory airfield of the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Plant (KnAAPO).
