Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland (; fy, en Nijkrúslân), officially abbreviated as Kollumerland c.a., is a municipality in the northern Netherlands, located in the province of Friesland. In 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Dongeradeel and Ferwerderadiel to form the new municipality Noardeast-Fryslân. Population centres Augsbuurt, Burum, Kollum, Kollumerpomp, Kollumerzwaag, Munnekezijl, Oudwoude, Triemen, Veenklooster, Warfstermolen, Westergeest and Zwagerbosch. As of 24 March 2022, there are 344 municipalities ( nl, gemeenten) and three special municipalities () in the Netherlands. The latter is the status of three of the six island territories that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Munnekezijl
Munnekezijl ( fry, Muntsjesyl; gos, Muntjesiel) is the easternmost village in Noardeast-Fryslân, Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of 488 in January 2017. Before 2019, the village was part of the Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland municipality. There is a windmill in the village, the Munnekezijlstermolen. History The village was first mentioned in 1510 as Monicken nyem szyl, and means "sluice of the monks" which is referenced to the monastery of Gerkesklooster who built a sluice at the location around 1450. In 1476, the sluice was damaged by the citizens of Achtkarspelen. In 1539, the sluice was moved further to the east, and in 1585, a sconce was built near the sluice. The current sluice dates from 1741. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1899 to replace its 17th century predecessor. In 1840, Munnekezijl was home to 333 people. Zuidhorn
Zuidhorn () is a town and former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. The town largely depends on the city of Groningen. A railway line, operated by Arriva, connects the town with Leeuwarden in Friesland and Groningen. Due to a municipal reorganisation in 1990, Zuidhorn municipality was extended when it merged with, though not physically connected to Oldehove, Grijpskerk and Aduard. On 1 January 2019, the municipality was dissolved and merged into the municipality of Westerkwartier. Transport Zuidhorn has two train stations: Zuidhorn and Grijpskerk. At least once an hour a train runs between Groningen and Leeuwarden. On weekdays, trains stop twice an hour in Zuidhorn. Until 1991 there used to be a third station on this line, Visvliet. De Marne () is a former municipality in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Bedum, Eemsmond and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. Lauwersmeer
Lauwersmeer () is a man-made lake in the north of the Netherlands, on the border of the provinces of Groningen and Friesland. The lake was formed on 23 May 1969, when the dike between the bay called Lauwers Sea and the Wadden Sea was closed. It is noted for birdwatching. On the eastern shores of the Lauwersmeer is the Marnewaard, an exercise area of the Royal Netherlands Army. The central and eastern parts of the lake became Lauwersmeer National Park on 12 November 2003. Sweagerbosk ( Low Saxon: ''Swoagerbosk'') is a village in Noardeast-Fryslân municipality in the province Friesland of the Netherlands. It had a population of around 638 in January 2017. Westergeast (Low Saxon: ''Westergaist'') is a village in Noardeast-Fryslân in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It has a population of around 621 in January 2017. Before 2019, the village was part of the Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland municipality. History The village was first mentioned around 1333 as Ghaest. It is located on a slight hill ('' geast''). The village uses west to distinguish with . The Dutch Reformed church dates from 1200. In 1807, the tower was lowered. The church was restored between 1954 and 1957. Some of the stones from the tower were reused in a little ''woudhuisje'' (forest house) next to the church. The little house was demolished in 2018. In 1840, it was home to 263 people.
