Koerner House (Spokane, Washington)
The Koerner House is a historic building located in Palm Springs, California. The house was designed in 1955 for the Vancouver-based couple of Leon Koerner and Thea Koerner. The house is a fine example of the residences that master architect E. Stewart Williams designed between 1947 and the end of the 1960s. The single-story structure features a shed roof, deep overhangs, and large glass surface areas with sliding glass doors that facilitate its indoor-outdoor flow. Leon Joseph Koerner
Leon Joseph Koerner (May 24, 1892 – September 26, 1972) was a Czechoslovakian-born industrialist and philanthropist in British Columbia. He was born in Nový Hrozenkov in what is now the Czech Republic and was educated at the Export Academy in Vienna, the London School of Economics and the Sorbonne. After serving in World War I, he joined the family lumber company, becoming head of the company in 1920. In 1922, he married Thea Rosenquist. With the rise of the German Third Reich, Koerner's family abandoned their possessions and business interests; he escaped to London, England and then travelled with his wife to North America. In Vancouver, his wife came down with a severe case of the mumps. While his wife was recovering, Koerner acquired a defunct lumber mill in New Westminster. Thea Rosenquist
Theodora Anna Mathilde Julie Rosenquist (8 May 1896 – 26 July 1959), known as Thea Rosenquist, was a German stage and film actress. She acted in several Austrian silent films, and was considered a replacement for Liane Haid. She married industrialist Leon Joseph Koerner (or Körner) in 1923, and settled down in Vienna and Prague. Rosenquist was of Jewish origin and had to escape following the Nazi takeovers of Austria and Czechoslovakia. She went to the Netherlands, on to Britain before finally settling down in Canada. Several of her family members were killed in the Holocaust. Rosenquist and her husband established a charitable foundation, the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation, in 1955. The Thea Koerner House Graduate Student Centre of the University of British Columbia was named in her honour.
