Nigel Kneale
Thomas Nigel Kneale (28 April 1922 – 29 October 2006) was a Manx screenwriter who wrote professionally for more than 50 years, was a winner of the Somerset Maugham Award, and was twice nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best British Screenplay. Predominantly a writer of thrillers that used science-fiction and horror elements, he was best known for the creation of the character Professor Bernard Quatermass. Quatermass was an heroic scientist who appeared in various television, film and radio productions written by Kneale for the BBC, Hammer Film Productions and Thames Television between 1953 and 1996. Kneale wrote original scripts and successfully adapted works by writers such as George Orwell, John Osborne, H. G. Wells and Susan Hill. He was most active in television, joining BBC Television in 1951; his final script was transmitted on ITV in 1997. Martha Kneale
Martha Kneale (née ''Hurst''; 14 August 1909 – 2 December 2001) was a British philosopher. Education and career Martha Hurst was born in Skipton, Yorkshire. She obtained her B.A. degree from Somerville College, Oxford in 1933. Martha was a tutor and Fellow in philosophy at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford from 1936 to 1966. Martha married William Kneale in 1938; they had two children, George (born 1942) and Jane (married name Heal; born 1946). She was one of the first women fellows at Oxford University to maintain a fellowship after marriage. Kneale is best known for a 1962 book that she co-wrote with her husband, William, ''The Development of Logic''. She wrote the chapters on ancient Greek logic. Paul Kneale (born 1986 in Toronto, Ontario) is a London based artist whose practice explores the impact of digital technology on the world's perception of reality and art. His works have been included in the Moscow International Biennale for Young Art 2016 and are part of private collections such as the Rubell Family Collection and the Collezione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. Timothy Kneale (born 16 October 1982 in Douglas, Isle of Man) is a Manx sport shooter who specializes in the double trap. He is the current world record holder for the event, having scored 148 out of 150 at the 2014 ISSF World Cup meet in Munich, Germany. Apart from his world-record feat, Kneale has won two medals in a major international competition, a silver at the 2015 World Shotgun Championships and a bronze as a representative of the Isle of Man team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. Bryan Kneale
Robert Bryan Charles Kneale (born 19 June 1930) is a Manx artist and sculptor, described by BBC News Online as "one of the Isle of Man's best known artists." Biography Born in the island's capital, Douglas, Kneale studied painting at the Douglas School of Art, from which he graduated in 1947, and then moved to London, to study at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1948, he won the Rome Prize and spent some time living in Italy. During the 1950s, he learned welding, and in 1960 took to sculpture in preference to painting, and became a teacher. He has taught at Hornsey College of Art and Design, and from 1963 until his retirement from teaching in 1995 he taught sculpture at the Royal College of Art. Matthew Kneale (born 24 November 1960) is a British writer. He is best known for his 2000 novel ''English Passengers''. Life Kneale was born on 24 November 1960 in London, the son of screenwriter Nigel Kneale, and the children's writer Judith Kerr. He is also the grandson of Alfred Kerr, a German theatre critic and essayist, who as a dissident and critic of the Nazi Party was forced to flee Germany with his family in 1933. Matthew first accompanied his mother on a visit to Germany in 1967. Kneale was brought up in Barnes, attended Latymer Upper School in West London, and then studied modern history at Magdalen College, Oxford. William Kneale
William Calvert Kneale (22 June 1906 – 24 June 1990) was an English logician best known for his 1962 book ''The Development of Logic'', a history of logic from its beginnings in Ancient Greece written with his wife Martha. Kneale was also known as a philosopher of science and the author of a book on probability and induction. Educated at the Liverpool Institute High School for boys, he later became a fellow of Exeter College, Oxford, and in 1960 succeeded to the White's Professor of Moral Philosophy previously occupied by the linguistic philosopher J. Patricia Kneale (17 October 1925 – 27 December 2008) was a British stage and television actress. She was born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Career Kneale gained a Meggie Albanesi scholarship to RADA, where she was awarded the Bancroft gold medal. Her acting debut was in 1947, as Olivia in Twelfth Night at Regent's Park. In 1952, she played Lady Macbeth at the old Nottingham Playhouse. It was in this production that Bernard Kay learned, rehearsed, and played Macbeth in less than 24 hours. Birchville Cat Motel
Birchville Cat Motel is a one-man experimental music project formed by Campbell Kneale from Wellington, New Zealand. Although largely unrecognised by the mainstream press and public in his home country, Kneale has toured throughout Japan, America, Europe, and Australia. His first vinyl release was ''Jewelled Wings'' on the Freedom From label. Many of Kneale's rare and out of print recordings have been reissued recently on a 6cdr collection entitled ''Chaos Steel Skeletons''. Kneale operates the labels Celebrate Psi Phenomenon and Battlecruiser which have issued CDs by artists from New Zealand and overseas, including Matthew Bower (under the name Mirag) and Simon Wickham-Smith with recent releases by Richard Youngs and Alex Neilson and one involving Tony Conrad. Barbara Jane Heal (''née'' Kneale, born 21 October 1946) is a British philosopher, and since 2012, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge. Biography Heal is daughter of a pair of notable Oxford philosophers William Calvert Kneale and Martha Kneale (née Hurst). She was educated at Oxford High School for Girls and New Hall, Cambridge, where she read first History before changing to Philosophy (Moral Sciences) after two years. She also took her PhD at Cambridge, working on problems in the philosophy of language. Victor Kneale
George Victor Harris Kneale (born 12 January 1918, died 8 April 2007) was a Manx politician and former Speaker of the House of Keys and Education Minister. Victor Kneale was elected MHK for Douglas West in 1962. He was Chairman of the Board of Education for 15 years, having been a non political member of the Board from 1951 until his election in 1962. He was then elevated to the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man in 1974 before resigning his seat to contest the 1981 General Election. He resigned because of his belief the Legislative Council members should be publicly elected. This was an issue he was still pursuing until a short time before his death having recently submitted his own system for such elections to the Council of Ministers for consideration. He won his old seat back and became Minister of Education until 1990 when he was elected Speaker of the House of Keys. He retired at the 1991 General Election.
