Klon (poetry)
The ''klon'', also spelled ''glawn'' or ''gaun'' ( th, กลอน, ; lo, ກອນ, ), is a Thai/ Lao term referring to either poetic verse in general, or a specific prosodic form in Thai and Lao poetry. Thai In the narrow meaning of the term, the ''klon'' is a more recently developed form of Thai poetry where a stanza has four ''wak'' (lines), each with the same number of syllables. It became the most popular form during the early Rattanakosin period, and is usually considered an original Thai form, as opposed to older forms such as ''kap'' which originated from Indic or Cambodian poetry. Reproduced form The ''klon'' metres are named by the number of syllables in a ''wak'', e.g. ''klon hok'' (, ) has six syllables per ''wak'' (''hok'' means ''six''). Lao Language
Lao, sometimes referred to as Laotian (, 'Lao' or , 'Lao language'), is a Kra–Dai language of the Lao people. It is spoken in Laos, where it is the official language for around 7 million people, as well as in northeast Thailand, where it is used by around 23 million people, usually referred to as Isan. Lao serves as a lingua franca among the citizens of Laos, who also speak approximately 90 other languages, many of which are unrelated to Lao. It is a tonal and analytic language, similar to other Kra-Dai languages as well as to Chinese and Vietnamese. Spoken Lao is mutually intelligible with Thai and Isan, fellow Southwestern Tai languages, to such a degree that their speakers are able to effectively communicate with one another speaking their respective languages. Thai Poetry
Poetry has been featured extensively in Thai literature, and constituted the near-exclusive majority of literary works up to the early Rattanakosin period (early 19th century). Most of imaginative literary works in Thai, before the 19th century, were composed in poetry. Consequently, although many literary works were lost with the sack of Ayutthaya in 1767, Thailand still has a great number of epic poems or long poetic tales -- some with original stories and some with stories drawn from foreign sources. The Siamese poetical medium consists of five main forms, known as ''khlong'', ''chan'', ''kap'', ''klon'' and ''rai''; some of these developed indigenously while others were borrowed from other languages. Sunthorn Phu
Phra Sunthorn Vohara (Phu) ( th, พระสุนทรโวหาร (ภู่), , ; 26 June 1786 – 1855), known as Sunthorn Phu ( th, สุนทรภู่, , ), is Thailand's best-known royal poet. He wrote during the Rattanakosin period. Phu's career as a royal poet began in the reign of King Rama II, and when the king died, he resigned from the role and became a monk. Twenty years later, in the reign of King Rama III, he returned to court as a royal scribe, where he remained for the rest of his life. Phu was renowned for composing verse, and his epic poetry is popular in Thailand to the present day. His works include ''Nirat Phukhao Thong'', a collection of poems recounting his journey to the Golden Mountain; ''Nirat Suphan'', his journey to Suphan Buri province; and the ''Phra Aphai Mani'' saga. Mor Lam
Mor lam ( Lao: ໝໍລຳ; Thai/Isan: หมอลำ ; ) is a traditional Lao form of song in Laos and Isan. ''Mor lam'' means 'expert song', or 'expert singer', referring to the music or artist respectively. Other romanisations used include mor lum, maw lam, maw lum, moh lam, mhor lum, and molum. In Laos, the music is known simply as lam (ລຳ); mor lam (ໝໍລຳ) refers to the singer. The characteristic feature of ''lam'' singing is the use of a flexible melody tailored to the tones of the words in the text. In poetry, a stanza (; from Italian language, Italian ''stanza'' , "room") is a group of lines within a poem, usually set off from others by a blank line or Indentation (typesetting), indentation. Stanzas can have regular rhyme scheme, rhyme and Metre (poetry), metrical schemes, but they are not required to have either. There are many different : Stanzaic form, forms of stanzas.
